Ali Wong Used a Curling Iron on Her Sheer Golden Globes Dress Before the Red Carpet

Ali Wong continued her winning streak in both the style and award departments at the 2025 Golden Globes on January 5, following up last year’s Best Actress in the Limited Series or TV Movie category nod with another Golden Globe trophy. This time, the Beef actress took home an award for Stand-Up Comedy on Television for her Netflix comedy special Single Lady–and she looked every inch the flawless leading lady as she posed on the Golden Globes red carpet in a bold red Balenciaga dress. However, the behind-the-scenes prep needed for Wong’s gown was a little more intricate (and DIY) than it appeared.

Before she joined a slew of other celebrities on the red carpet, Wong reportedly had to have the tulle ruffle embellishments on her sheer custom strapless gown individually “curled with a curling iron,” according to an Instagram post shared by style correspondent Zanna Rassi. Each painstakingly-curled tendril was made out of sheer mesh material, creating a layered effect with a black underlay peeping out through the see-through fabric.

Wong cinched in the whimsical Balenciaga dress’s relaxed silhouette with a matching red bow around the waist, and accessorized with her signature black-framed glasses. Meanwhile, long black opera gloves–one of the night’s biggest trends–complemented the dark pointy-heeled boots that peeped out from under her semi-sheer skirt as well as her long dark hair.

While Wong didn’t walk the Golden Globes red carpet with boyfriend and fellow comedian Bill Hader, she did exchange a sweet kiss with him before walking onstage to accept her latest award. It was a special moment for the pair, as Single Lady follows Wong’s journey getting back into the world of dating post-divorce, including striking up a romance with Hader.
