Nicole Kidman responds to decades old Tom Cruise divorce rumours: 'Not me'
Nicole Kidman has debunked a viral image of her from 2001 and clarified if it had anything to do with Tom Cruise.
Nicole Kidman has finally spoken out about a viral image of her, over 20 years after it was taken. The image, which was turned into a popular meme during the 2010s, shows Kidman walking outside looking ecstatic with her arms in the air triumphantly and was often described as the moment she finalised her divorce from ex-husband Tom Cruise.
As all good memes do, the image circulated online heavily, particularly on platforms like Twitter (X) back in its hey-day, taking on a life of its own as its depiction of a woman breaking free from the shackles of a man. But was it really a reaction to divorcing Tom Cruise?
Sorry to break the collective hearts of the internet, but apparently not.
Nicole Kidman clears up viral meme: 'Not true'
In fact, Kidman went onto say the image was "not me". But before we get too confused, there's a pretty simple explanation behind it all.
Debunking it had anything to do with her divorce from Cruise after 11 years of marriage, in a recent interview with British GQ, Kidman discussed the origins of the meme.

While the meme story was that Kidman had just left her lawyer's office after her divorce from Cruise was finalised, she finds the fictional story quite hilarious.

"That's not true," Nicole laughed, before going on to reference another one of her famous memes — where she's clapping awkwardly with her fingers not meeting and only her palms touching. "I had a massive heavy borrowed ring on and it was really painful, and I was scared of wrecking the jewellery. Ha! There’s always something behind the actual images that go out there, right?” she told GQ.
