A Family Affair: Viewers' strange complaint about new Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron movie
The new rom-com has fans once again throwing speculation out about Zac Efron.
Netflix's new rom-com A Family Affair has an all-star lineup, featuring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King. The movie follows a young celebrity assistant's mother as she embarks on a passionate affair with her daughter's boss.
Zara, played by Joey King, is forced to navigate life as her mother Brooke (Nicole) starts an intimate relationship with her egocentric movie star boss Chris (Zac). Brooke faces conflict over being a mother and also a woman reclaiming her identity and sexuality.
When the trailer was first released, fans were excited to see the dynamic between Nicole and Zac.
"Never thought I would see Nicole Kidman hooking up with Zac Efron. Man, movies are gonna be wild this year," one person commented on the YouTube trailer. "Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron in a movie wasn't on my bingo card," another said.
But with Family Affair premiering on Netflix recently, many fans have had the same complaint about the movie, finding Zac Efron's face distracting.
Netflix viewers' strange complaint about A Family Affair
In various movie review threads on Facebook and Reddit, people have given their opinions on the film, but many are coming back to one thing: Zac Efron's face.
"The movie itself was cheesy but in a cute chick flick way. But I couldn’t get over how much I disliked Zac’s face now!" one person said. "He used to be sooooo handsome!!! It kinda ruined it for me. Nicole’s hair colour bugged me a bit too. There’s no natural facial expressions between the two."

"I couldn’t even finish watching it (for many reasons) but the first reason was Zac Efron, I kept thinking he was starting to look like that guy who was obsessed with looking like the Ken doll. Zac used to have nice eyes, now you can barely see them," another person complained.
"We could not take it seriously. My daughter and I turned it off. We couldn’t get past Zac Efron’s new chin and my daughter felt he was too young for Nicole Kidman," another said. "Zac was strangely different," another added.
"Turned it off boring and Zac's face was weird," someone else bluntly pointed out.
Fans defend Zac and Nicole
"I find it very sad that so many people think that it's appropriate to publicly criticise the appearance of others, as I have seen in the comments. I found Nicole to be as beautiful as ever, and Zac is a very handsome man," one person said. "Apparently he had an accident requiring reconstructive surgery, and I hope he doesn't see any cruel remarks about his face."
"The movie was funny and sweet. I could care less about all the commentary on Zac Efron’s face as his rocking body was all I could notice," someone else added. "All I saw was handsome Squidward. Whatever makes him happy I guess?" another said.
What happened to Zac Efron's face?
Zac Efron suffered a traumatic accident back in 2013 when he slipped in his house and smashed his face on a marble counter. The actor said he fainted and woke up to his chin bone "hanging off his face" and has had to reportedly undergo numerous surgeries and physical therapy over the years to help the parts of his face function.
Zac also explained in an interview that after the injury, his masseter muscles grew as they were overcompensating for the other muscles that weren't working.
Fans have speculated over the years that it wasn't the accident that changed his face, but either a combination of fillers and steroids used for bulking up for other film projects.
"But can you explain why his face changed between 'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile' from 2019 to how? His accident happened 2013, in my opinion he did way more correction if you compare his face from 2019 and 2024?" one person posted on Reddit.

"It doesn't matter it happened 11 yrs ago, scar tissue, muscle growth, age, issues with the original surgery... a lot of things can happen or are we just gonna pretend none of these things matter after having reconstruction on your face? Everyone heals different, none of us know his medical history either," one person said in defence of the star.
Zac has spoken out previously about the questions people have about his face, saying he doesn't pay attention to social media.
"If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work,” he told Men’s Health in 2022.
