NCIS: Origins Serves Up a Very ’80s Mike Franks Flashback — Exclusive Sneak Peek

A young Mike Franks is rocking Rambo hair in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek from what cast member Kyle Schmid called “a Mike-and-Tish episode” of CBS’ NCIS: Origins.

In this season’s 13th episode, titled “Monsoon” and airing Monday at 10/9c, the team investigates the brutal murder of a veteran who fell on hard times after serving in Vietnam, leading Franks to reflect on his own struggles following the war. Also, Gibbs (Austin Stowell) considers a new path forward.

In the clip above, we get a sense of Franks’ post-Vietnam struggles, in a flashback to Texas circa 1982. We then see what “present day” Franks is up to, while camped out in a San Diego laundromat. Press play above to see what promise Franks is breaking in that laundromat stake-out.

Having spent the fall chronicling Gibbs’ very first days with NIS (including the reveal that he at one time slipped off to murder his wife and daughter’s killer), NCIS: Origins with its winter premiere began diving into Franks’ past, starting with the events that led to both him and his brother being shipped off to Vietnam.

“When [showrunner] David [J. North] told you that they were going to be dipping a toe into the Mike Franks story, he wasn’t kidding,” Schmid recently told TVLine. “We get to see a lot of very deep and very exciting stuff that allows you to see the man that we’ve become familiar with on-camera and why he is who he is.”

This week’s episode, written by showrunners North and Gina Lucita Monreal, is one “that I’m very proud of,” Schmid told us. “It really is a Mike-and-Tish episode” that reveals to viewers the details about her attack, and Franks’ plan to find the man responsible. Tonantzin Carmelo (La Brea) plays Tish.

“If it doesn’t leave you with a whole bunch of conflict and emotion, you can’t have a heart,” Schmid said, “because … in learning the origin story of the assault, we as an audience and as human beings will understand why it is so difficult for Mike to let it go.”
