It's safe to say Kat Donovan did not see that ending coming.

In Missing You, Kat's (Rosalind Eleazar) world is turned upside down when she finds her ex, Josh (Ashley Walters), on a dating app 11 years years after he up and disappeared. Long story short, it's not him, which launches another mystery. All the while, Kat's also trying to figure out what really happened to her father after his murderer confesses he was paid to take the fall.

Based on Harlan Coben's novel, Missing You is a twisted tale that has captured audiences on Netflix, and much like viewers, Eleazar was hooked from the first episode. "They sent me the first episode and I just had to know what happened, so I downloaded the book immediately and read it in two days," Eleazar tells Entertainment Weekly. "I find it interesting how people deal with trauma and I think that we compartmentalize a lot. It's a survival mechanism. We rarely go and seek help. And I actually like that [Kat] seemed sort of fine, but it's locked somewhere and obviously we see in the series that it all goes tits up."

Over the series' five episodes, Kat experiences quite the emotional rollercoaster as she discovers that her father was a corrupt cop, that he was also secretly gay and in a longterm relationship with a man, and then, in the final scene of the series, she learns that her ex, whom she's recently reconnected with, was the one who killed her father (on accident).

The show then ends as a shocked, tearful Kat sits down on her bed, and Josh sits next to her before she reaches out her hand toward his. And that's where we leave them.

"Obviously, in the book, it basically ends the way we also ended it, but there was a lot of talk about how it should end. I was more on the side of keeping it open," Eleazar says. "There's a final hand moment at the end and I thought, I dunno whether I feel that that's too quick. That's just so heavy. Your fiancé's killed your dad. It's too much to process. However, I also do like that you can interpret her sort of touching his hand at the end as, 'I can't deal with this just now.'"

Eleazar continues, "A human mind cannot process what that means that quickly. To be honest, it's just pure, utter shock. For me, I had this image of me drowning really slowly. I wasn't trying to fight to get out. It was a sinking feeling."

Perhaps that hand moment was Kat reaching to Josh for help. Or maybe they'll never be the same. For Eleazar, the open-ended finale felt more true to life. "I actually came to the conclusion that I didn't think it was important to know whether she was going to forgive him. I found it was more helpful for me to not have anything concrete," she says. "It was more fun to play and I think it makes it more believable because we rarely know where we're going in life. I like when things aren't fully resolved. It's far more interesting than when it is tied neatly in a bow."
