MasterChef fans call out 'offensive' moment: 'Totally unnecessary'

A comment on social media has sparked a debate about what is and isn't appropriate on TV.

MasterChef fans are divided over whether a particular moment in the reality series should be deemed “offensive” or not.

Taking to a popular Facebook group on Monday night, one viewer said they didn’t appreciate how often the contestants say “bloody” while they’re cooking because it’s not “polite”.

“I’ve held back from making this comment for quite a while but felt it needs to be said,” they wrote. “I think contestants should be mindful of their language. I find it quite offensive to have to listen to every other sentence punctuated by ‘b****y’ this and ‘b****y’ that when it is totally unnecessary.

“I have been brought up to use polite language in polite company and certainly in social context and definitely to a public audience. I brought my kids up that way too.”

The user added that they also don’t watch Gordon Ramsay’s cooking shows because of his bad language, and hopes MasterChef’s producers “take on board” her point of view.

Fans quickly took to the comments to share their thoughts on the word, with some people agreeing it is “atrocious” how often the competitors have said it this season.

“When you don’t swear in a family it’s more noticeable! I heard Rhiannon [Anderson] a few times tonight, not necessary,” one viewer replied.

“I agree. It put me off that particular person from the start. There is no need for it at all,” another added, while a third wrote, “No need for blasphemy, most offensive”.

'Couldn't care less'

Meanwhile, a majority of users argued that ‘bloody’ isn’t a swear word but rather just Australian slang that has been used for decades.

“I’ve never heard any of the contestants swear, ever,” someone commented, followed by another who said, “To be honest I never even noticed. And I couldn’t care less”.

“I feel like maybe it’s an attempt to avoid a more offensive, or obviously sweary word?” a different user suggested. “I think in the kitchen during competition with such intensity, it’s probably an attempt to somewhat censor”.

“I respect your beliefs, but seriously this isn’t as big an issue as you've made it out to be,” one fan responded, while others encouraged the original poster to simply stop watching the show if they’re offended.

“Perfectly ok to voice an opinion. But it’s also ok to just switch channels,” they wrote.
