MasterChef's Cath reveals she was 'mortified' watching moment on TV

EXCLUSIVE: Cath Collins spills on how she really felt watching the season air.

She might not have made it to the finale, but Cath Collins certainly made her mark on this year’s season of MasterChef Australia.

The 54-year-old home cook quickly became well known for uttering her Owen Wilson-style catchphrase “wow” whenever she was impressed or surprised by something in the kitchen - with fans even labelling her ‘The Wow Lady’ on social media.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle following her elimination during Sunday night’s episode, Cath admits she was shocked by how often she said it while watching the show.

“When I first saw that I was a little bit mortified because I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, Cath’,” she shares.

“I was a bit of a joke between [the cast], and even watching it back I would actually rewind and then tape other contestants saying ‘wow’ and I’d put it on our group chat saying, ‘I’m not the only one who says it!’.”

While she initially felt embarrassed by some of her comments on the show, including when she made a remark about Curtis Stone's hair, Cath says she's proud of how she carried herself throughout filming.

“It was just no filter,” she laughs. “So a lot of it was a surprise for me watching it back and just not realising what I had said and I've just thought, ‘Good on you, Cath’. So that's been quite nice.

“It's been really fun having a bit of a laugh at myself, and it's been a joy to share it with my family.”

Future plans

Coming off the show, Cath reveals she is planning to use her catchphrase as part of her next project.

“I've actually started a book, it’s called ‘Cath’s Kitchen: From How to Wow’,” she shares. “It’s just some recipes that I've always had and they’re recipes that I've given my girls, so that's something which is really nice to focus on.”

In addition to the cookbook, Cath says she has a long list of plans she hopes to achieve using her newfound skills and platform from the show.

“I'd love to do some cooking courses, whether with young kids, with teenagers, young people with challenges,” she details. “I used to teach at TAFE in tourism, so it would be nice to transfer that into food.

“I also love high tea so I'd love to team up with a venue and serve up some beautiful high teas. We’ll just have to see where it goes!”
