MAFS’ Richard calls out Timothy for surprise act during filming: ‘Let down’

EXCLUSIVE: The season 11 groom also revealed the surprising person he trusts the most from the show.

Season 11 MAFS Australia participant Richard Sauerman was the 'oldest groom' to ever appear on the experiment (you may have heard that mentioned once or twice throughout the season), which could have potentially made it trickier for him to confide in the rest of the cast when he needed advice. Luckily, there was another 'older groom' - 51-year-old Timothy Smith - however Richard has revealed that just because they were closer in age, did not mean that he could trust the Melbourne groom.

Speaking on the most recent episode of Yahoo Lifestyle’s Behind the Edit podcast, Richard exclusively revealed that he felt 'let down' by Timothy after going to him to chat about his marriage.

“When I was on the show and Andie and I were having difficulties, I was quite confused," Richard told Yahoo Lifestyle. "I didn't know what was going on and I felt like, what's happening here? You want to talk to someone, so the person I talked to was Timothy because he was the oldest groom and the closest to my age."

He continued, "I talked to him a bit and I know that pretty much everything I said to him he told Lucinda who told Andie, because they are very, very close. So it took me a while to tweak that and when I did I was like, ‘Oh okay, I better shut up’."

Richard went on to say that he thinks Timothy's alleged loose lips may have affected some of the conversations that were had at the commitment ceremonies because "she (Andie) had an idea of where I was coming from maybe. I don't know, really, to be honest. But I did sense that."

Reflecting on Timothy's arc over the course of the experiment, Richard recalled that toward the start of the season when Timothy was seen losing his temper, the rest of the cast were already "pissed off with him."

"Behind the scenes, I always had his back," Richard said. "I said, ‘Listen, he's just this tough Aussie guy, that's all it is. He's not a bad person’. And then of course, it all turned and everyone fell in love with him, and by then I realised that I couldn't actually trust him.

So I felt a little bit let down by him to be honest. But that's fine, that’s okay. It’s not a big deal."

'Only one person I trust'

In a surprising twist, Richard revealed to Behind the Edit who he could trust in the experiment, and it was someone you'd never suspect.

“There’s only one person I trust," he said. "The only person I trust from the show is Jack. Jack is solid. Jack did some and said some really bad s**t on the show and he owned it and he copped it and him and Tori had an absolute nightmare of a time."

He continued, "He’s not going to be my best mate, but he's a really, really solid guy and a good guy. I speak to Jack every week and anything I say to him doesn't go to anybody else. Unlike, for example, I was sending texts and things to Andie and I hear them being read out on podcasts.

Like no, I'm not going to talk to you if you're going to tell other people what I've said. You’ve got to talk to someone, so I talk to Jack. If I go to the Gold Coast I will for sure Jack and Tori and go out with them for dinner, 100 per cent."
