MAFS' Mel Schilling reveals how she broke her cancer diagnosis to daughter

Married At First Sight's Mel Schilling has opened up about her cancer diagnosis, revealing how she told her nine-year-old daughter Maddie about the shocking news. The MAFS expert announced late last year that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer, undergoing surgery to remove a tumour which she nicknamed 'Terry'.

Speaking to OK! magazine, Mel, 52, explained that her daughter has a “nine-year-old’s version" of what cancer is and what it means.

Mel said her daughter understands she's unwell, but "understands it in her own way".

“She knows I’m having chemo and she knows that when I have an infusion I’ll be tired and need extra cuddles, which she is there for. She understands it in her own way," Mel said.

The MAFS expert also went on to say her husband has been her "rock" during her treatment. “He’s gone through his own tough year as he’s had grief in his life, but has still been there for me,” she revealed.

In an interview earlier this year with Magic FM Mel said as she undergoes her third cycle of chemo, she's starting to feel "a bit sick".

“Feeling a little flat today actually, to be totally honest with you,” she said after they asked how she was doing.

“I’m going through chemo, I’m on my third cycle now and I’m just starting to feel a bit sick. I was saying earlier it sort of feels like being hungover, like I’ve been drinking all night.”

“This thing is not beating me. I’m here to fight, I just need to make some adaptions,” she said. “Time is [important]. Building space in my schedule because… I love my work and just kind of doing my passions, so for me it’s very tempting just to say yes to everything."
