The 'Love Hurts' Cast Has Some Serious Credentials

What's an action movie doing starring two Academy Award winners? That's not the worst thing for Love Hurts with Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose to boast, but it is a head-scratcher. Though, TBH, I kind of feel like we should embrace it. There's no reason why movies with killer fight sequences shouldn't have the best actors in Hollywood too. Martial arts can and should contribute to triple (or, in DeBose's case at least, quadruple) threat status.

Despite the candy hearts on the poster, this Valentine's Day weekend release is not a romantic comedy. At least, not as far as I know! It's an action comedy about a hitman-turned-realtor who goes up against his brother to save his friend. The love that's hurting so much is very much of the friendship and familial variety. Here's everything you need to know about Quan, DeBose, and the actors joining them on this violent, funny, and maybe even touching adventure.

Ke Huy Quan as Marvin Gable

Marvin is a real estate agent with a killer past who gets pulled back into the game and the action by his former partner.

Quan charmed the world as a child actor in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and has burst back onto screens in recent years. He won a friggin' Academy Award for Everything Everywhere All At Once and then stole scenes on Disney+ in Loki and American Born Chinese, and now this!

Ariana DeBose as Rose Carlisle

Rose is the afore-mentioned former partner who sends him an ominous message. She may or may not have made it out of the game with a lot of cash.

While she's been getting into the action movie game recently with this movie, Kraven the Hunter, and Argylle, Academy Award winner for West Side Story, infamous BAFTA host, and iconic Tony Awards host DeBose got her start on Broadway. Her stage credits include Pippin, Bring it On, Summer, and the original cast of Hamilton. You might also know her from Westworld, Schmigadoon, or The Prom–and she appeared as a competitor on So You Think You Can Dance way back when.)

Daniel Wu as Alvin "Knuckles" Gable

Knuckles is Marvin's brother. He is very much not out of the game.

Wu, Quan's former American Born Chinese co-star and DeBose's former Westworld co-star, is best known for Into the Badlands and flms including One Night in Mongkok, the Jackie Chan movie New Police Story, and Warcraft. He has won acting and directing prizes at the Chinese Film Media Awards and Hong Kong Films Awards. He's the 2022 winner of the Asian World Film Festival's Bruce Lee Award. Not too shabby!

Marshawn Lynch as King

King plays one of the people looking for Marvin on behalf of his brother.

You already know him as a former professional football player with the Seattle Seahawks (and, prior to that, the Buffalo Bills and briefly the Oakland Raiders), but turns out he's really funny. After playing himself in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The League, and 80 for Brady (and more), Lynch was hilarious as a teacher/coach in Bottoms. And he was also in Westworld... is this movie a secret sequel to the HBO series?

Mustafa Shakir as The Raven

Based on the trailer he appears to be another one of Knuckle's lackeys. He also appears to have a lot of knives.

Marvel completionists will know that Shakir played "Bushmaster" in the second season of Luke Cage on Netflix. But if you're not, and that's more than valid, you might recognize him from movies like Ghosted and shows like Cowboy Bebop, The Deuce, and The Night Of.

Lio Tipton as Ashley

Ashley works at the real estate firm.

This former America's Next Top Model contestant has been in some of your favorite movies. You know them from Warm Bodies, Crazy Stupid Love, Two Night Stand, Damsels in Distress, annnnnd the TV show Why Women Kill.

Rhys Darby as Kippy Betts

With a name like "Kippy Betts," one must assume he's going to be another quirky criminal. But he's not in the trailer, so it's hard to say!

Once upon a time, comedian Rhys Darby played the Flight of the Conchords manager "Murray" in the HBO sitcom about the New Zealand folk duo trying to make it in the city. He played a werewolf in the Taika Waititi film What We Do In The Shadows that inspired the series. You may have seen him in A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix or as Nigel in the new-ish Jumangi movies. But most recently he played a gentleman pirate who romanced Waititi in the tragically short-lived high seas sitcom Our Flag Means Death.

André Eriksen as Otis

Otis appears to be King's partner in crime and violence. The two of them work with Knuckles.

Eriksen is a Norwegian hip hop and graffiti artist as well as an actor. You might recognize him from Violent Night, The Trip, and/or the Scandinavian soap opera Hotel Caesar.

Sean Astin as Cliff Cussick

In the trailer, Cliff presents Marvin with a "Realtor of the Year" award. Is this just a cameo, or does he have a secret badass past too?

To some, Astin is "Bob from Stranger Things." That's devastating to those of us who know him best as Samwise Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the titular character from Rudy, or (maybe most importantly for Love Hurts) Mikey from The Goonies. He's a legend! He directed a short film in the '90s that was nominated for an Oscar! He played Santa in Sabrina Carpenter's Christmas special!

Cam Gigandet as Renny Merlo

His character is unknown, but just like "Kippy Betts," the name "Renny Merlo" evokes some serious cartoon villain vibes.

That's James a.k.a. the villain from Twilight to you, thank you very much! You may also know Gigandet from The O.C, Easy A, Burlesque with Cher and Christina Aguilera, The Magnificent Seven, and also Violent Night.

Drew Scott as Jeff Zaks

Let's not mince words here: he's the Property Brother who's not married to Zoey Deschanel. He is a writer, producer, director, and (obviously) television host as well as actor.

Since Love Hurts takes place in the real estate world, his presence makes sense... right? Is he playing a rival realtor? Can't wait to find out.

Stephanie Sy as Sherry Reeber

Sherry and her husband Chet are some of Marvin's real estate clients.

Another Violent Night alum! There are multiple reunions happening in this movie, huh? This Canadian actress has been in a ton of Christmas movies on Hallmark and more. She recently starred as Jenna in a regional production of the musical Waitress.

Adam Hurtwig as Chet Reeber

Chet and his wife Sherry get caught up in the action while house hunting.

Another Canadian actor, Hurtwig has also been killing the Hallmark Christmas game and has shared the screen with his Love Hurts partner in several movies, including–would you believe it–Violent Night. (He was in Christmas on Call with Donna Kelce, IYEC.)

Liam Stewart-Kanigan as Toby

This local Canadian actor, whose character is not yet revealed, is not in the Christmas business. He is, however, in the horror business with Elevator Game and Orphan: First Kill.
