Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, could be house hunting in the UK. And even though it may be motivated by a heartbreaking reason, it’s the best move I think he could make.

A search for a home in the UK is the latest on the prince's "to do" list, says royal commentator Tom Quinn.

“As time goes by, Harry misses some aspects of his old life in the UK,” Quinn told the Mirror. “Inevitably, the honeymoon period where everything in the States is new and exciting is coming to an end and Harry is looking back at the past through rose-tinted spectacles.”

Quinn also disclosed that Prince Harry, 39, sadly misses his mates in the UK: “many of whom have not visited as they don’t get on with Meghan.”

And if Prince Harry’s real estate foray goes to plan, it could finally signify his desire to strengthen ties with his family, fulfil royal duties and provide his children with a connection to their British heritage. And no matter what your thoughts on the perpetual "whodunnit" episode of the British monarchy, wouldn’t that be the best outcome? When we do anything on the fly, we don’t often think of the consequences down the track.

Four years after Prince Harry’s "fly" event occurred — Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex hot-footed from the UK to live their happy ever after in the US in 2020 — it seems Harry is getting a little edgy, a little agitated that every trip back to the UK isn’t one where he is embraced with open arms and able to stay in one of the many royal residences. In fact, during Harry’s last few visits to the UK he’s had to fork out for his own accommodation. The horror!

Since King Charles III evicted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from Frogmore Cottage in June 2023, the pair have not had a permanent place to stay on his home soil since.

Sure, he isn’t short of a quid and he’ll not be setting up a tent outside Buckingham Palace or somewhere on the Mall anytime soon. But this search for new digs in the UK feels like he is taking a small step toward trying to address and perhaps rehabilitate relationships with his blood family, including brother Prince William and sister-in-law Kate Middleton, who haven’t seen him on his last few visits.

It is never easy for anyone — let alone a Royal — to literally pack up and leave their home country, move to a new one and think life will resume as normal, that you'll finally be happy. But we’ve all seen the photos and, at times, Harry doesn’t look particularly happy at all.

When you’ve had the unique upbringing he's had and also a strong group of friends who he grew up with, it’s hard to start all over again. Even if you are with the love of your life — in his case, Meghan — and your two beautiful children. It would be a challenge to find the deep, close bonds like the ones he has back home in his shiny new place of residence.

If Harry were to consider buying a new residence in the UK, the reasons are pretty straightforward and threefold.

  1. Family Ties: He wants (and needs) to re-establish a connection with his family, particularly his father King Charles and his brother Prince William.

  2. Official Duties: Although he and his wife have stepped back from senior royal duties, there might still be occasions where he needs a base in the UK for official events or charitable work.

  3. Personal Reasons: Harry’s desire to have a home in his native country for sentimental reasons or to provide his children with a connection to the UK would be a huge mitigator.

And with those three reasons, it is the best idea I’ve heard — to let some of the past go and move on as some semblance of a family. Whether it’s a Royal one or not.
