I’ll be honest, I’ve never thought of using anything other than a traditional toilet brush with bristles to clean the loo. Yes, the brush is easily one of the most disgusting items in the house - and never looks good in the bathroom no matter how cute the holder is - but it’s a job that simply must be done.

As always, Kmart has introduced a new item to revolutionise the tedious chore which has sparked quite a fierce debate online. One TikTok creator named Jess (@_prettyliving), who posts weekly videos on the platform showcasing her unique ‘Friday Finds’, recently shared a post about the retailer’s $10 Flexible Toilet Brush.

Unlike a regular toilet brush with polypropylene bristles, the item is made from thermoplastic rubber and is described as both “functional and stylish”. The Flexible Toilet Brush can also be mounted to the wall rather than taking up space on the bathroom floor.

Jess explained in the caption that she decided to buy the ANKO branded product after seeing a video about “how gross bristle toilet brushes are” because they hold so much water.

“The brush head is flexible so it's much easier to clean with. I also love that it doesn’t hold water, has a removable insert for cleaning and can be wall mounted!” she wrote. “So far, no complaints, I’m very happy with it.”

While Jess was very pleased with her silicone brush, her followers - which were mainly made up of cleaners - suggested against using the product and told her to keep her old brush.

“I’m a cleaner and every time I see one, I want to cry. It’s so hard to clean it properly, especially if there’s some build-up,” one person replied.

“As a cleaner, get rid of it. We can't get into the creases and they don't scrub the deeper stuff off,” another added, while a third said, “Also a cleaner! My biggest pet hate, rubbish! And no cleaner than the bristle style if they’re cleaned properly people!”.

“These are the s**ttest brush ever! Just because Kmart is cheap doesn’t mean it’s good!” someone else remarked.

“Changed mine over and regret it. Silicone one doesn’t clean properly. Want to change back to bristle,” a different user responded, followed by another who shared, “My parents bought this and they complain about it daily”.

Others also called the item “useless”, “terrible” and “a waste of money”, with one person going so far to call it the “worst toilet cleaner ever”.

Cleaning expert and television presenter Aggie MacKenzie told The Guardian that she would never use a toilet brush in her home because it gives her “the heebie-jeebies”.

“I can’t bear them. I just think they are vile,” she told the publication. “There is a fetid liquid bacteria soup at the bottom of every toilet brush holder.”

Instead, Aggie says she “would much rather get a pair of thick rubber gloves on and use my fingernail under the thick rubber gloves to get any bits”.

Kadi Dulude, founder of US cleaning business Wizard of Homes, also told Consumer Reports that another way to clean your toilet is sprinkling baking soda in the bowl and scrubbing with a sponge.

If you do use a toilet brush, however, it's recommended that you clean it after each use with a disinfectant spray and replace it every six months.
