Kmart’s Anko Spot Cleaner has been flying off the shelves with shoppers loving the item to deep clean their filthy couches and vehicles. But would you use it to wash your dog?

One confused shopper was going through the manual and found an entire section on how to use the appliance – along with the supplied dog cleaning nozzle and brushes – to clean your dog’s fur. The instructions state it doesn’t completely replace dog baths but could reduce the frequency they’re needed.

The Kmart fan shared her find in a popular Kmart Facebook group and asked if anybody had actually used it on their pet. The replies were mixed, with many finding the alternative use rather ridiculous.

Considering it makes quite a loud noise, some pet owners were horrified by the thought of getting their pup to stay still while they were washed by the Kmart Spot Cleaner.

“My dog won’t even stay in the same room when I turn it on to clean furniture,” one shopper wrote.

“I can’t mop, vacuum or shampoo the floors or carpets and have the dogs stay in the house – [they run] straight out the dog door!” another added.

“My pansy American Staffy would hold a grudge indefinitely if I tried this on him… so not happening lol,” a third remarked, while another shopper replied, saying: “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

“My dog attacks mine so I’m afraid this isn’t possible,” another said.

“My pooch would literally poop himself if I came near him with this machine. It’s extremely loud,” a shopper noted.

Out of nearly 100 comments, there was just one pet parent who had successfully used the Anko Spot Cleaner on their dog. “My girlfriend has this with her Groodle and it worked really well. He doesn’t like vacuums but somehow doesn’t mind this,” they said.

Of course, many couldn’t help but make a few jokes at Kmart’s expense, because it seems so bizarre that you can use the same cleaning item on your couch as your dog.

“Na I just throw my dog in the washing machine. I’m joking,” one person quipped. “Does your dog have to be named Spot?" another joked.

“I’d be afraid my Pomeranian would become a Chihuahua if I used this on him,” a third said.

“I tried to clean my cat with it, didn’t work,” another joked.

Yahoo Lifestyle spoke to Janie Rose, owner of franchise grooming companies Blue Wheelers and Dash DogWash, companies that have been washing and grooming dogs for 25 years, about this strange Kmart discovery.

She says there’s “really no comparison” between using an appliance like the Spot Cleaner at home or going to a professional groomer, and she doesn’t recommend trying it out on your pet.

“A professional groomer has been trained and certified as a groomer… in all aspects of dog washing and dog grooming,” she said. “If it was my dog, I would not use a Kmart Spot Cleaner to clean my dog… it’s a personal choice, but we don’t recommend home grooming full stop.

“We say it is a skill, it is not a hobby. It’s something that our groomers all over Australia have been trained to do.”

She said the loud noise of using an appliance at home could possibly “scare” your dogs, and most pet owners aren’t trained to be able to calm a terrified animal.

Rose added that she would also steer clear from any DIY wash services in petrol stations, as well as taking your dog to a pet hydro bath or pet tub. “They’re just not sanitised the way our groomers fully sanitise between each dog. [It’s important] the dog is entering a fully clean environment.”

While Dr Teagan Lever, Head Vet at Pet Circle, hasn’t personally used a Kmart Spot Cleaner, she told Yahoo Lifestyle it could potentially be “stressful” for your dog.

“The sound and sensation of having a full body wash using a bath, shower hydrobath or with a spot cleaner machine can be stressful for some dogs and their pet parents. Washing your pet too frequently can also cause skin dryness and irritation as it can remove natural oils from the coat,” she warned.

Lever also said she recommends keeping full baths to once a month, unless your pet flops in a muddy puddle or gets extremely dirty. In between full baths, you can use things like colognes, pet wipes and coat sprays – which sounds a bit easier than using the Kmart Spot Cleaner.

“[They’re] a great option for keeping your dog looking and smelling fresh between baths. In some cases, these products can also include moisturising and detangling agents to improve coat softness and shine,” she added.

Considering the manual says it doesn’t replace a full dog wash anyway, the vet’s options seem much more hassle-free.
