During the current cost of living crisis, savvy Australians have been turning to budget retailers like Kmart to help them nab a bargain. One lucky shopper just shared a Kmart and Ikea ‘hack’ that saved her around $710 when renovating her kitchen, and it has been labelled “very clever”.

The Kmart fan hoped to find three rattan-styled pendant lamps to complete her gorgeous kitchen but was shocked when she saw the eye-watering prices. At Temple & Webster, the CLA ROTA Interior Natural Rattan Ellipse Pendant Light will set you back $269.99 a pop, so you’d be looking at just over $800 for three.

Her ‘hack’ ended up costing just $90 and it’s one you can easily replicate at home. She combined a $22 Kmart Rattan Look Pot Holder with Stand and an $8 IKEA Hemma pendant lamp cord set for her kitchen.

“Guys! I was looking for pendants for our new kitchen and couldn’t believe how much they cost at major retailers. I decided to retrofit these Kmart Rattan Look Pot Holder with Stands into pendant light shades using a suspension kit from IKEA,” she wrote in a popular Facebook group.

“The total cost of these three pendants was $90. Super easy and pretty effective right?” she asked.

Fellow Kmart shoppers were stunned by the genius ‘hack’, with one saying they ‘loved’ her kitchen.

“I love these, and they will last for eternity,” another wrote.

“Looks so good!” a third added.

While she created the pendants, she did note that she had an electrician install the actual fittings.

Kmart’s Rattan Look Pot Holder with Stand is quite a popular item and has a variety of uses. Customers love being able to buy something that looks like rattan without the hefty price tag.

“Would easily buy it again. Sturdy and stable and the rattan look without the rattan price,” one person wrote on the Kmart website.

“Practical design and looks really lovely in a variety of settings. I originally had it as a plant stand but it has since become the new toilet roll holder and for some reason it looks even better in the bathroom! Great purchase, very happy,” another added.

“This pot plant holder looks modern, classy and tasteful. I was surprised at the high quality too! I thought the rattan would be scratchy and would peel off – but it is smooth and soft, like it has been polished. I highly recommend this pot plant holder if you love plants and the ‘wooden/brown’ look,” a third remarked.

“It’s strong and stable, looks like real cane but because it’s plastic it’s waterproof and probably isn’t going to get mouldy,” another pointed out.
