Kmart mum's warning after $5 item causes terrifying injury: 'Horrible'

A mum has revealed a horrific injury she received after using a $5 Kmart item on her young daughter. She was applying a set of festive OXX Cosmetic fake nails on her 9-year-old daughter on Sunday when some of the adhesive dripped onto her pants.

In a terrifying moment, the nail glue burnt through three layers of material, resulting in some painful-looking sores on her skin. Luckily, the Kmart shopper hadn’t attached any of the fake nails to her daughter's fingernails when the accident occurred.

In a Facebook group for Kmart fans, the mum emphasised that she loves the retailer and just wanted to share her story as a “heads up”.

“The elves gave these nails to my nine-year-old a couple of nights ago. I went to put them on her on Sunday arvo when the glue dripped on me,” she began.

“It went through three layers of material and burnt the material to my skin. I had to rip it off and took a few layers of skin with it along with ripping holes in all three layers of material.

“I am so glad it happened before I put the nails on my young daughter’s nails. If it did that to me what would it do to a child’s nail bed,” she said.

Many shoppers begged the mum to report this to Kmart as well as seek medical attention.

“Terrible, adds [a] whole new meaning to ‘oh what fun’. Definitely report it, it needs to be recalled if that’s what it’s capable of doing,” one person wrote.

“I hope you sort medical care ASAP. Even the blurred pic that looks more than first degree,” another chimed in.

“Gee that looks like a nasty burn. Definitely report to Kmart! I’ve also used their nail kits before and the glue it comes with has damaged my skin — but nothing like what you experienced. This stuff should not be for sale, especially when it’s so appealing to young children,” a third added.

Some shoppers shared their own experiences with Kmart nail kits, convincing many group members to return or dispose of unopened kits.

“This exact same thing happened to me with the Kmart nail glue. I have a terrible scar on my leg. It burnt a hole through my jeans, it even smoked. Horrendous,” one shopper warned.

“Similar thing happened to my daughter last night. Burnt her and me!” agreed another.

“Yup, this burnt my daughter’s skin on her thighs! Was horrible,” a third said.

Others pointed out that this particular product isn’t meant for children under 15, and that the burn looked like a “normal chemical reaction”.

“I feel for you, and I have had this happen to myself before but this is nothing to report to Kmart about. That is a normal chemical reaction. It is an adhesive bonding glue, specifically Ethyl 2-Cyanoacrylate and Polymethyl Methacrylate. There is a caution warning on the packaging that says this is not suitable for children under 15 years of age, so even if your child was the one burnt, there is nothing Kmart can do,” one shopper explained.

“It is perfectly safe to use on your nails even direct contact with skin is perfectly fine. When the glue comes into contact with cotton or other fibres, that’s what causes the reaction, any nail glue will do that,” a second added.
