Kmart and Bunnings shopper saves $4000 with 'fabulous' DIY hack

A savvy shopper has been praised online after revealing how they saved $4000 on a piece of furniture using items from Kmart and Bunnings.

Taking to a popular Facebook group this week, the mother-of-two explained that after receiving a $4500 quote for a custom sideboard, she decided to make her own for a fraction of the price.

She purchased three Slatted Storage Cabinets at Kmart valued at $99 each and painted them with Dulux Licorice Green paint from Bunnings to match her kitchen.

“Swapped the handles for the half moon ones and spray painted the handles and legs copper,” she said.

“All up cost me about $450.”

The woman later edited the post to add some helpful painting tips in case others wanted to try the hack for themselves.

“Undercoat with a shellac paint. Also DEFINITELY paint the doors before you assemble. It will save you a world of pain,” she said alongside a laughing emoji.

She also added that she didn’t seal the paint but “probably should”, and she wishes she had spray painted the hardware before assembly because it “really really bugs [her] now”.

‘Absolutely unbelievable!’

The post was quickly flooded with supportive comments who commended the woman’s hard work and complimented the finished product.

“This is my all-time favourite hack/upcycle/project - it’s bloody beautiful,” one person wrote, while another added, “Absolutely unbelievable!”

“You’ve done an amazing job and also given me some inspo to replace my cabinet so I get better storage,” a third replied

“Looks amazing, well done you. And that colour is a show stopper!” another shared, followed by someone else who said, “This colour is fabulous”.

“In a world of white, this deep colour gives a welcome feel of depth, comfort and earthiness,” a different user remarked.

“Wow, looks amazing. I think you have broken the internet,” one fan laughed.
