Kathy Bates Mouths NSFW Word in Epic Reaction to 2025 Critics Choice Win
Kathy Bates had an unbelievable night at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards—literally!
The actress, 76, took home the award for best actress in a drama series for her performance in Matlock at the awards show, held Friday, Feb. 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. And her reaction was priceless.
After Bates’ name was announced as this year’s winner, she mouthed the word “f—k” more than once as she sat stunned in her chair.
“Thank you, all,” she told the crowd as she took the stage to accept her award.
“I, well… I really didn't didn't think this was going to happen, and I have to thank Paramount and CBS,” she continued, as she thanked everyone involved in the TV legal drama in which she plays Madeline "Matty" Matlock.
“When we come to work every day, there’s so much love on that set and so many hundreds of years of experience—rolling the dolly, working the camera, the costumers, the prop people, they're just the top of the line. And walking onto that set just feels like a miracle, and I'm so grateful to all of them,” she said.
Bates also praised those responsible for helping during the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. “I really have to thank the firefighters,” she said. “Our producer Eric Christian Olsen had a house in the Palisades, and it burned down, and so it's very personal to us. And to watch all of you guys standing in a line with just a wall of flames in front of you is just terrifying, and I don't know how you did it, but I thank you so much for so many of us in Los Angeles.”
She concluded, “Last but not least, I have to thank Jennie Snyder Urman, who wrote and created Matlock, for creating such an amazing role for an old lady like me, and I just want to tell Eric Olson, who hasn't quite found a home yet, this is coming to you first thing for decor. Thank you very much.”
Also nominated in the best actress in a drama series category were Caitriona Balfe for Outlander, Shanola Hampton for Found, Keira Knightley for Black Doves, Keri Russell for The Diplomat and Anna Sawai for Shōgun.
The 30th Critics Choice Awards, hosted by Chelsea Handler for the third consecutive year, airs live from the Baker Hanger in Santa Monica, Calif., honoring the finest achievements of filmmaking and television programming in 2024.

When Handler took the stage at the show, viewers couldn’t help but notice what was on the host’s arm.
When the 49-year-old opened the awards show wearing her off-the-shoulder, sleeveless burgundy gown, she addressed the noticeable bandage on her left arm.
“Some of you may be wondering what's going on here. I have a PICC line in my arm, and no, I'm not on The Substance,” she said, referring to the 2024 body horror film starring Demi Moore.
