English singer-songwriter James Blunt has made a bizarre promise to his fans that he will give them “the power to absolutely f**k [his] life” if they help return his debut album to the top of the charts. The You’re Beautiful hitmaker, 50, is set to re-release his 2004 record Back To Bedlam - which is both the biggest-selling debut album by a British artist and the best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK - on October 11 for its 20th anniversary.

Taking to social media on Thursday, James hilariously announced that he will legally change his name to “whatever the public wants” if the album hits number one on the UK charts upon its release. The You’re Beautiful hitmaker asked his followers to list suggestions in the comments and the name with the most likes will be the winner.

“My name is James Blunt, and you have the power to absolutely f**k my life,” he begins in the video. “I know you’ve heard the rumours, and they’re true, I’m re-releasing my debut album Back To Bedlam on October 11 - something that has kept me consistently rich for the past 20 years.

“So as a way to give back to you, my adoring public, if Back To Bedlam re-enters the charts at number one, I will legally change my name. What will I change it to? Well, that’s entirely up to you.”

The former X Factor Australia judge then shared some of the names he’s been called across his two-decade-long career, including “Most Hated Man in Pop”, “Annoying”, “James Beige” and “James C**t”.

“I’ll let the people decide. But if it doesn’t go to number one, I’m not changing my name,” he continued. “It’s safe to say this is the most democratic moment of the year.”

The video has already racked up over 1 million views on Instagram and 1.9 million views on X, with fans rushing to the comments to share their suggestions.

“Blunty McBluntface,” one person wrote on X, which currently has the most likes at the time of writing.

“First name: ‘My’ and second name: ‘Lover’ (makes it fun when people say goodbye),” another added on Instagram.

“Blames Junt. It's got a certain ring to it,” someone else shared, followed by a different user who suggested, “James Sharp”.

Others proposed names that don’t have anything to do with his current moniker, including “Hugh Janus”, “Lorenzo von Matterhorn”, “Damn I-never-thought-I’d-really-have-to change-my Name”, and even “James Corden”.

James himself has also thrown some of suggestions into the mix, including “Jimmy Spliff” and “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Pop Star Four Chord Song Machiney”.

James confirmed that he’s serious about the publicity stunt during an interview on The Chris Moyles Show in the UK on Monday, and also revealed the one name he hopes fans don’t vote for.

“I swear on my life and the life of my one fan - Brian from Glasgow - I will change my name should it hit number one,” he said. “I swear on Brian’s life and my life. To whatever the public wants.

“But you know, as long as it’s not, you know, Blunty McBluntface.”
