Guide dog puppy raisers wanted due to shortage
Lengthy waiting lists for guide dogs have led to urgent calls for people to become volunteer puppy raisers.
The Guide Dogs association said its current waiting list was 16 months.
A spokesperson for the charity said the current shortage of puppy raisers meant it had to slow down its breeding programme.
Jacqui Richomme, a volunteer puppy raiser in Jersey, said: "It's just an immense experience and I would recommend it to anyone."
Ms Richomme has trained guide dog puppies since 2012, when the programme started on the island.
She now owns four of them who have since retired from their working lives.
Speaking to BBC Radio Jersey about the qualities a raiser needed, Ms Richomme said: "It's very important for the person who is going to do puppy raising to be dedicated.
No veterinary costs
"It's like having a new-born baby in the house. You need a lot of patience but you are given so much guidance by the association."
She added: "There is an online training programme, there are regular visits from the association just to see how things are coming along.
"You are not expected to pay for any of the veterinary costs or food - that is all covered by the association.
"You just have to love the dog, keep it secure and happy."
Despite the amount of responsibility placed on volunteers, Ms Richomme said taking in a puppy led to "a lot of fun".
"It's an absolute joy of a job and you meet wonderful people," she said.
