Since 1983, Carols in the Domain has been broadcast across Australia on Channel Seven just a few days before Christmas. The annual event, officially titled Woolworths Carols in the Domain, has featured performances from holiday icons like Michael Bublé, Rod Stewart and Kelly Clarkson and Australian legends such as Hugh Jackman, Tina Arena and John Farnham.

While the concert is typically pre-recorded the week before it airs on TV, it was recently announced that this year’s edition of Carols in the Domain will be broadcast live on Channel Seven and 7plus on Saturday, December 21. Michael McKay, who has worked as the show’s executive producer for 36 years, shared in a statement that the return to a live broadcast after several years “is an exciting milestone”.

“This event has always been about bringing people together and being able to share it live with the entire nation enhances that spirit of connection and celebration,” he said.

The news should be well received by viewers who have previously complained about Carols in the Domain being pre-recorded.

“Whatever happened to the live TV presentation? Is Carols in the Domain just going to be a pre-recorded TV package every year now?” one person wrote on social media last year, while another added, “Just found out Carols in the Domain isn't going to be broadcast live again. Pretty disgusting”.

Meanwhile, Carols by Candlelight has been broadcast live on Channel Nine every year on Christmas Eve since 1979.

Channel Seven recently shared a video announcing that Sunrise anchors Natalie Barr and Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington will return as hosts after taking on the role last year.

“So Carols in the Domain is just around the corner and Shirvo, you did such a good job last year, let’s have you back! What do you think?” Nat remarks in the clip.

“Oh yes, I’m back! There you go, I get another chance because Sam Mac wasn’t available apparently!” Matt jokes. “No that’s not true. I am coming back for Carols, cannot wait. I hope you guys come back too.”

Nat has previously hosted Carols in the Domain 11 times, mostly with her former Sunrise co-host David ‘Kochie’ Koch, while Matt made his debut last year.

Channel Seven has already announced a handful of performers taking to the stage, including The Wiggles, Samantha Jade, Rhonda Burchmore, Christine Anu, Hugh Sheridan, Conrad Sewell, Budjerah, Mark Vincent and many more.

Dancing With The Stars legend Kym Johnson will be making her Carols debut as both a performer and choreographer, and Chong Lim will serve as the musical director.
