“When Calls the Heart”'s Mamie Laverock's Mom Says Fall Was Not 'Intended': 'The Story Will Be Told'

Laverock's parents, Rob and Nicole, previously said the actress had "undergone multiple extensive surgeries" and was currently on "life support" following her fall

Mamie Laverock's mother is providing an update on the actress' condition after falling five stories from a hospital balcony.

A family spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE on May 30 that the When Calls the Heart star, 19, was released from surgery. Now, her mom Nicole shared that Laverock "opened her eyes" for the first time since the fall.

"Let's just hope this is the turnaround and she's going to get through this now," Nicole shared with the Los Angeles Times. "I couldn't be happier that people reached out and cared. The story will be told."

Though she didn't elaborate on the injuries Laverock sustained from the accident, which occurred on May 26, Nicole said her daughter was in "tremendous pain" after her body was "shattered" from the fall. She noted that Laverock was "aware" and able to squeeze Nicole's hand, but the actress also required sedation to stay alive as she recovered from her surgeries.

Nicole also claims her daughter's fall was not intentional, placing blame on the hospital where Laverock fell — St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver — while allegedly being escorted around the facility. Because of that, the family is considering taking legal action.

"This is an absolute miracle and there will be accountability," Nicole said, noting that the fall was not "intended" nor was it a suicide attempt.

"All we care about is that Mamie can make a recovery and that she’s alive and that she’s fighting and that she’s strong," the star's mother added. "It's unbelievable that she’s with us."

A spokesperson for Providence Health Care, which operates the hospital, told PEOPLE it does not comment on patient-related matters due to its privacy and confidentiality policies. However, the rep shared: "In cases related to patient safety, an internal critical incident review is conducted to determine exactly what happened and to make recommendations for improved patient safety."

"Our hearts go out to the patient, family, and all affected by this event, and offer our best wishes for a full recovery," the spokesperson added.

On May 11, Laverock was transported by her mother Nicole to a Winnipeg hospital due to a “medical emergency,” per the GoFundMe campaign her family created. She was then transferred to a Vancouver hospital, where she “was escorted out of a secure unit of the hospital and taken up to a balcony walkway from which she fell five stories," according to an update posted on May 28.

“She sustained life-threatening injuries, has undergone multiple extensive surgeries, and is currently on life support,” Nicole and her husband Rob wrote in the campaign. “We are all devastated, in shock, at this intensely difficult time.”

Shortly after the news, a spokesperson for Hallmark Media told PEOPLE: "We are deeply saddened to hear the news about Mamie. As a beloved member of our When Calls the Heart community, we wish her and her family peace, comfort, and many prayers during this difficult time."

When Calls the Heart star Erin Krakow was among the first to speak out in support of Laverock and her family's GoFundMe campaign. In an update shared on her Instagram Stories on June 3, Krakow reshared the fundraiser link as she wrote: "Mamie's family has asked me to share their immense gratitude with all of you."

"Mamie's road to recovery is long from over, but after falling 5 flights she is miraculously on the mend," she continued. "There won't be further updates at this time as Mamie's family will be focusing on healing, but their GoFundMe is still active."

Prior to her stint on the Hallmark Channel, Laverock had her first professional role in 2012’s This Means War starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. Although her improvised appearance ultimately got cut, she told Ruth Hill’s blog Media from the Heart that the experience was “unbelievable.”

On When Calls the Heart, Laverock had a recurring role as nursing student Rosaleen Sullivan on the show’s first two seasons. For her portrayal of Rosaleen in the Western drama, she received the Young Artists Award for best performance in a TV series in 2015.

She later reprised her role in 2023 for the show’s 10th season.
