The best low energy hobbies for when you want to try something new
We're always looking for a new hobby to try out, but at this time of year when the weather is gross outside and our work/social/university lives (delete as appropriate) are getting busier by the day, and we feel ourselves approaching burnout, we're craving an activity that's low maintenance but brings in maximum reward when it comes to our enjoyment, satisfaction and relaxation. Enter: low energy hobbies.
A low energy hobby is essentially an activity to do when you're lacking in motivation but still want to feel like you've achieved something or need something to stimulate your mind but won't require you exerting lots of physical movement (aka running 8 miles) or taking up lots of your time. They're also the perfect habits to pick up when watching TV or chilling in the evening when you don't want to scroll through your phone for the millionth time. Sure you're watching Gilmore Girls repeats, but you're also making a cute piece of art while doing it.
Hobbies are so important for our mental wellbeing with a Nature Medicine study finding having a hobby is "good for your health, mood, and more." And when we're already feeling so overwhelmed with life, taking even just 30 minutes back for yourself to try out a hobby could do a world of good.
So whether you're looking to add a new hobby to your already filled roster, or simply want to try and inject some more fun into your evenings, these are 10 of our favourite low energy hobbies.
10 low energy hobbies to try out
1.Reading
Easily one of the most low energy hobbies going, and one that you will likely be able to do straight away. Seriously, we bet you could close this article and find a book on your shelf you've always said you'll read but never found the time to. Or if you need some recommendations, these are our favourite books out this month. Oh, and one ultimate reading hack we've come to love is using a Kindle stand, which will hold your Kindle or iPad, so you don't even have to hold your book up while reading. Peak low energy.

2. Colouring
Real talk, I miss the time when our biggest dilemma each day was which picture we were going to colour in that afternoon. While we can't exactly go back to this era of our lives, we can still enjoy the joys of colouring in thanks to a range of colouring books for adults. They had a real moment a few years ago and are now having a revival thanks to a number of viral TikTok products. Even Ariana Grande is a fan.

3. Puzzles
Whether it's jigsaws, sudoku, or a brain teaser book, there's no end to the way you can test your brain, even while sitting on the sofa. Personally, we love a jigsaw puzzle. An easy and achievable hobby to pick up and is super fun to do on a Sunday afternoon while your roast cooks in the background and Harry Potter is on the TV.

4. Paint by number
Again, this is a classic hobby we did as kids that we're all about bringing back into our adult lives. All you need to do is order a kit online and the paint by numbers tells you exactly which colours match the corresponding numbers on the canvas and you're ready to paint away.

5. Sticker by number
This follows the same principal as paint by numbers, but just using stickers. Yes, we're adults and we still love a sticker book.

6. Diamond art
Chances are you'll have seen diamond art on your TikTok, and while it looks a little confusing at first, it actually couldn't be simpler. If you buy a diamond art kit it will have all the essentials tools you need to get started. Diamond art is similar to paint by numbers, different colour beads (aka diamonds) have a corresponding symbol on the canvas and you put the wax into the placer tool to pick up the diamond and place it in its correct position on the canvas.

7. Yoga
This is the only hobby on this list that really requires any sort of physical movement, but as a gentle form of exercise it works really well as a low energy hobby. Sure you can always head to your local yoga studio if you feel like it or just find a flat surface and dig out your yoga mat, lie down and put on a YouTube tutorial. It'll get you feeling relaxed in no time and also benefits your body too.

8. Crochet
Crafts are one of the most low energy hobbies you can pick up, and one of the easier ones you can pick up is crochet. You use a crochet hook to create interlocked loops of yarn or thread and one of the easiest things to get started with creating is a scarf or a small toy.

9. Learn a language
Yes this could be verging on a more intense hobby, but it doesn't need to be. Downloading Duolingo and learning any number of languages (French, Spanish or you know High Valyrian) can be done from the comfort of your sofa, or bed, and you don't need to commit a lot of time to it. Within weeks you'll be impressing your mates by ordering beers while on your Spanish holiday.
10. Make a mood board
A mood board or manifestation board is a great hobby to try out and a really fun one to do with friends. You can make a physical board by finding a canvas and then adding cut outs from magazines, newspapers or printing out images to add. Maybe you make a mood board for your goals for the year ahead or maybe it's how you envision your summer turning out. Alternatively, an even more low energy approach is to use Pinterest's collage tool and create digital mood boards from your favourite pins.
