Ke Huy Quan Got ‘So Scared’ on ‘Indiana Jones’ Set as a Child and Cried; Then Harrison Ford Kneeled Down to Tell Him: ‘I Will Never Hurt You’
Ke Huy Quan told Entertainment Weekly that Harrison Ford calmed his nerves when he got scared on the set of Steven Spielberg’s 1984 adventure “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” which marked Quan’s first acting job. He was just a child at the time.
“When we shot this sequence, I was so scared,” Quan said of a sequence where Ford’s Indiana Jones helps his character, Short Round, escape from the Temple of Doom. “And I cried. I remember Harrison Ford kneeling down in front of me and asking me if I was okay.”

“He said, and I’ll never forget this, ‘Ke, I want you to remember, I will never hurt you,'” Quan continued. “When he said that, oh my gosh, it just made me love him so much more. Here is Indiana Jones telling me that he’s gonna take care of me.”
While the two actors never starred in another movie together, Ford became one of Quan’s biggest advocates during the latter’s award season for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Quan won the Oscar for best supporting actor. Ford presented the best picture category at the ceremony and shared an emotional hug with Quan on stage when “Everything” was named the winner.
“I’m so happy for him. He’s a great guy,” Ford has previously told Entertianment Tonight about Quan’s Oscar nomination. “He’s a wonderful actor. He was when he was a little kid, and he still is. I’m glad. I’m very happy for him.”
Ford previously said ahead of the Oscar nominations announcement that Quan landing a best supporting actor bid would be “well deserved.” Ford added to Uproxx at the time, “He is really terrific in his movie. And I’m so glad to see him…and what he has become. I’m so happy for him. He’s such a happy guy, too.”
In his new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Quan credited Ford and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” for his love the action movie genre, saying: “I remember watching it for the first time at our premiere, seeing it put together with sound effects and music for the first time. I was blown away by all of it. I was only 13 then. It made me fall in love with action.”
Quan is currently the lead of his own action movie, “Love Hurts,” which is now playing in theaters nationwide.
