Arnold Schwarzenegger Gets Candid About Recent Heart Surgery in Health Update
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger, now 76, revealed to fans that he just got a pacemaker put in through heart surgery, but he assured everyone, "I'm doing great!"
The popular actor appeared to take a little inspiration from his cyborg Terminator character, saying during a new episode of his podcast, Arnold's Pump Club, "Last Monday, I had surgery to become a little bit more of a machine: I got a pacemaker."
Schwarzenegger, who already went through a few different heart surgeries in years past, noted that doctors advised him to get a pacemaker after scar tissue from one of the other procedures led to an irregular heartbeat.
"It had been like that for a few years, so I stayed in touch with my medical team and visited in person at least once a year to get a full check-up and see how my heart was doing," he shared before thanking everyone at the Cleveland Clinic where the surgery took place.
The surgery went smoothly, as Schwarzenegger was at an event with Jane Fonda only days later. While he stated that he has to take a break from the gym as he recovers, the actor assured fans that he would be back at work filming Season 2 of his show FUBAR very soon.
While talking about his health update, Schwarzenegger also touched on his initial instinct to keep the news of the surgery to himself, telling fans that talking about it "goes against so much of my upbringing in Austria."
But he seemed satisfied with his decision to share the news, revealing how many fans have already contacted him to say how he encouraged them to get their health checked out.
After detailing his family history of similar health issues, the former governor of California had a kind message to people: "I want you to know you aren’t alone. And if you’re putting something off out of fear, I hope I inspire you to listen to your doctors and take care of yourself."
Before his latest surgery, Schwarzenegger reportedly had an aortic heart valve replaced in 1997 before going under the knife again in 2018 to have a new pulmonary valve inserted. Then, in 2020, Schwarzenegger had another aortic valve replaced.
