Amy Schumer Issues Vulnerable Response to Harsh Critics of New Movie
Amy Schumer is cracking her heart wide open in response to those trolling her new Netflix film.
The actress took to Instagram with a screenshot from Variety's review of Kinda Pregnant, sharing the concluding paragraph which read, in part, "And Schumer is a great comedian, in part, because she’s a great actress. She keeps it real. ...we suddenly see the character not as a joke. A moment like that makes a difference. It tells you that even a commercial comedy that just wants to crack you up can, for a moment, be more than that, that it can reveal a bit of who we are."
The positive opinion of Chief Film Critic Owen Gleiberman served as a bright spot for Schumer amid a wave of harsh criticism over the film, with the star noting in the vulnerable caption of her post that it "means a lot" to her.
"It gets more clicks to trash someone," she acknowledged, "especially" her. "If you don’t like physical comedy or you are a single guy who prefers sci fi or sometimes the assignment is to trash something so I appreciate the bravery to say you like something."
Some responses to the film—and Schumer's casting—were downright cruel, with one tweet reading, "nobody on the planet wants this. stop casting amy schumer in stuff lol."
"There's still time to delete this movie from your servers," another said before it was even released.
"Kinda Pregnant is so terrible but i watched the WHOLE thing. I always get second hand embarrassment from Amy Schumer," someone else tweeted after the film's Feb. 5 release, while another called it "the worst film I’ve ever watched in my entire life."
The actress' colleagues and friends were quick to flood her with love on Instagram, with Laura Benanti replying, "Yes!! Such a good actress ❤️."
"You’re an amazing comedic actress 👏👏👏," Krystyna Hutchinson complimented.
Kinda Pregnant is now streaming on the entertainment giant.
