One Aldi shopper has come up with an ingenious Christmas dessert hack simply using a $6 roll of cookie dough — cute Christmas biscuits that feed the whole family on a budget? You love to see it.

While the festive season is one of the most celebrated times of the year, it also comes at a great cost. And no, I'm not just talking emotionally when you're waiting nervously at the lunch table to see which family member comes out with something completely ludicrous after popping the bubbles a bit too early.

The cost of gift-giving, food, alcohol, and sometimes even accommodation over the Christmas period quickly adds up, so if there are ways to feed or entertain the whole family for less than $10, we're all about it.

Melissa told Yahoo Lifestyle she came across Aldi's gingerbread cookie dough (that retails at $5.99 a roll) and wanted an easy way to make gingerbreads for the holiday season and spread some joy around at the same time.

"I baked three cookie dough rolls and it was enough for mum to take some to work, some for my kids and enough for a nursing home near us where we take gifts a few times a year," Melissa told Yahoo Lifestyle. "They were well priced, easy to make and tasty as. I usually make them from scratch but these were delicious and my kids enjoyed them as much as homemade. I used to own a catering shop and I'm super fussy but these passed my fussy test."

Uploading her images to a popular Facebook group, Melissa's festive gingerbreads received a lot of love, and she helpfully explained the method to those also wanting to try this at home.

"I cut the dough into discs, baked for 13 mins and when I took them out of the oven, I placed them onto a cooling rack and placed a hot tray on top to flatten them out," she shared, while also sharing the icing recipe she used to decorate the cute concoctions.

Fellow Aldi shoppers loved the idea of the biscuits, so much so it appears the retailer is now selling out the gingerbread cookie dough fast.

"I’ve bought the same dough I cant wait to make the Xmas cookies," one person said. "I’ll have a look for this next time I’m shopping. I absolutely love gingerbread cookies!" another fan enthused.

"Oh they are brilliant, well done," another person said. "I couldn’t find this dough, I was looking for it to make cookies for class party but failed... they look incredible."

"You all sold my store out," Melissa commented on the thread after being inundated with comments. "I should have stocked up before posting!"

Thankfully some people also pointed out that Coles stocks the dough. "I got this dough from Coles and have made it at work two days this week. Everyone LOVED it!" another fan said.
