2023 Logie nominations: Sonia Kruger reveals surprising strategy to win

EXCLUSIVE: The 2023 Gold Logie nominees react to their nominations.

The nominees for the 63rd TV Week Logie Awards have been announced, with a number of Australia’s biggest stars recognised for their work in TV over the past year.

Two-time Gold Logie winner Hamish Blake is nominated for the top prize once again for his work on LEGO Masters Australia, while The Bachelor and The Masked Singer host Osher Günsberg has landed his first nod in the coveted category.

The ABC also landed an historic three nominations for the coveted award with Australian Story presenter Leigh Sales, Mad as Hell host Shaun Micallef, and Mystery Road: Origin actor Mark Coles Smith all in the running for the title of Australia’s most popular television personality.

Sonia Kruger's surprising campaign strategy

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle at the nominations event on Monday morning, Sonia says it feels “really exciting” to be up for the Gold Logie for a second year in a row.

“The first time I thought it was a mistake, an anomaly,” she laughs. “So when I got nominated again I was just like, this is really cool, now I can enjoy it! Because I know what to expect, so I won’t be a deer in the headlights.”

The Channel Seven star notes that while previous Gold Logie nominees like Sunrise’s Sam Mac have had impressive award campaign strategies in the past, she’s vying for the “participation award”.

“If you look at Hamish, he hosts one show. And I’m not sure how many I host now but it’s more than one,” she jokes, referring to the handful of programmes she appears on throughout the year.

Julia Morris' honest reaction to her nomination

Comedian Julia Morris tells Yahoo Lifestyle it’s a “strange feeling” being nominated for the Gold Logie two years in a row.

“I don’t want to look like I want it too much, [but] I really want it,” she shares.

“You’ve got to kind of [act] casual and be like, ‘Yes it’s a real honour’, but all I’m thinking is what it would be like. I think the end of the night is perfect for me, I’ll be ready for a speech and take that show in a different direction.”

Julia hilariously kicked off her Logies campaign in April when she encouraged I’m A Celebrity viewers to vote for the reality show at the end of her emotional farewell speech to her longtime co-host Dr Chris Brown.

“I was worried during my Chris Brown moment that I was going to do all my blubbering,” she explains. “So I thought, what’s the most insincere direction I can take it in this moment?

“It just seemed like something our television industry would do, to ring out that moment and then go, ‘Hi guys, I need to gain out of this moment’.”

Why Osher Günsberg is 'extraordinarily grateful'

Having worked in the TV industry for 25 years, Osher Günsberg says it’s “extraordinary” to be nominated for the Gold Logie for the very first time.

“I still can’t quite get my head around the fact that I am considered to be able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my fellow nominees,” he tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “It’s a testament to my wife and my sponsor and my psychiatrist, to be honest.”

The Channel 10 host adds that he feels “extraordinarily grateful” to have developed into the person he is today across his extensive career, and believes “there’s a reason” why he hasn’t been nominated until now.

“I played this game very differently for a while and it ended with me being unemployed and paying rent out of my savings not being able to get hired and living in a foreign country because I was playing it to win the prize, and then when the prize wasn’t there I didn’t have anything,” he says.

“Holding the thing, whatever it might be - the gold medal, the bronze, the silver, the Logie - that’s not the prize. The prize is who you have to become to hold that thing and that’s the thing you get to be with for the rest of your life.”
