The popular personality announced in February that he had signed a deal with Channel Seven, who he began his TV career with in 2003, and will join the network in July.
Chris delivered a tearful farewell to I’m A Celebrity viewers ahead of Sunday night’s finale and said it has been “the greatest professional privilege” of his life to host the show with Julia.
“And it's because of the stuff you don't see at home,” he detailed. “It’s because of this incredible crew that's 400 strong, it’s our blended family that we are all so close with, and it's this incredible creative force that comes together like you cannot imagine.”
The Bondi Vet star went on to thank the show’s entire team of writers, producers and creatives for trusting him as host, as well as the viewers for laughing along with the “madness”, and ensured the series will continue after his departure.
“I just want to really make mention of this incredible woman who's beside me here,” he added as he began to tear up.
“Nine years ago when people said it was crazy to pair a vet with a comedian, we both laughed a lot at the time because we knew that we clicked and we knew that we had something special and I don't think I ever could have imagined how special it would be and where that spark would take us and the connection we would have.
“I just wanted to say it's been an honour, it’s been a privilege, and I really hope and I'm sure this is not the last time we experience this spark. It'll take us to so many places, I’m quite sure.”
Julia also became emotional as she thanked Chris for his time on the show and shared the story of how they first met almost a decade ago.
“We found ourselves presenting an award at the Logies together, and there on stage watched by a television audience numbering in their hundreds, we clicked,” she shared. “We had chemistry, and who would’ve guessed this odd couple would work so perfectly. Plus we're in love, not a lot of people know that.
“Anyway, you know the rest of the story, my beloved doctor. We became co-hosts on this crazy celebrity show and here we are nine years later. I was meant to get through that like a joke guys, but I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart I'm heartbroken to say goodbye to my beloved doctor.”
She ended the segment speaking on the entire show’s behalf and encouraged viewers to vote for I'm A Celebrity to win a Logie and “send the doctor off in style”.
'Will never be the same'
Following the emotional moment, viewers took to social media to express their sadness over Chris’ departure.
“You will be so dearly missed Dr Chris!” one person said, followed by another who added, “The chemistry will never be the same with anyone else”.
“Well, that was unexpectedly sad,” a third wrote about the segment, while a different user replied, “Tissues please!”.
“I’ve never seen Julia this emotional before. It’s sad that Chris is leaving,” another shared, with someone else writing, “This must be so hard for Julia”.
“What a legend, Dr Chris. A delightful departing speech,” one fan tweeted. “The show will be poorer without you. Julia will miss you dearly as will the crew and all those behind the scenes.”
