How Zendaya Gets Over Her Self-Consciousness Through Her Roles
And why method dressing always helps.
Zendaya has had quite the year, starring in both Dune II and Challengers. Although she was the leading lady in two of this year's biggest blockbusters—and is a fashion darling— it turns out, she still feels self-conscious from time to time. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for the actress round table, she said, "I’m a very self-conscious person. Everything I do, I’m very self-critical."
Filming, however, has helped her gain more confidence. She told the outlet that being on set is "one of the few places that I don’t judge myself. I can just be super free."
However, once she begins a press tour, her self-consciousness starts to seep back in. "I’m like, 'Oh, now I’m self-conscious about the work that I just made.'"
In another interview with W Magazine, she explained that she was a "shy kid," but she has gained confidence through acting and fashion over the years. "I'd create my own little outfits, do my own hair and makeup. Falling into different characters helped me get out of my shell," she said.
Even though Zendaya may feel self-conscious when she's on her press tours, she certainly doesn't look it. Instead, she keeps her confidence up by continuing to play a character through method dressing.
"[Method dressing] helps," she told W. "It really does, because it's an odd thing to get up in front of people and pose in a crazy outfit. For me, if I create a character, it makes it feel less strange."
Perhaps that's why Zendaya has fully committed to the method dressing trend this year. For the Dune press tour, she wore a Mugler robot suit, a dress made out of scarves, an intergalactic brown two-piece, and a Givenchy cyborg suit. Meanwhile, for Challengers, she switched things up with a range of grass green tenniscore looks.
