Katie Holmes's Unexpected Footwear Combination Broke a Major Fashion Rule

What might be a fashion "no" to some is usually a resounding "yes" for Katie Holmes. And somehow, she always ends up looking good. 

A minidress over jeans? Flawless. Carrying multiple tote bags over her shoulder? Suddenly, commuting is chic. I can go on and on, but that's the magic of Holmes's style: it's elevated yet relatable, and most importantly, never boring. But sometimes that means breaking the fashion "rules" every now and then. Like, yesterday, when the actress was spotted on the streets of New York City wearing her beloved ballet flats in an unexpected color and paired with an even more unexpected accessory. 

Sporting a pair of bright white Mary Jane flats, Holmes chose to draw further attention to her feet with a high-contrast set of black, ankle-length socks that were fully visible beneath the hem of her two-tone jeans. Because, white—well, that would be too predictable.

On top, she layered a black wool coat over a beige turtleneck sweater and carried a black purse—plus a white tote bag—and two cups of coffee. She finished off her look with a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses and styled her brunette hair in natural, wind-swept waves. 

While this may be the first time Holmes has worn ballet flats with socks, she's no stranger to wearing her favorite shoe style in non-basic shades. Ahead of the holidays, the Dawson's Creek alum stepped out in a festive red velvet pair, and before that, she opted for a bold metallic gold color.
