The Wonder Years’ Danica McKellar Offers Hope to Fans Disappointed by Series Finale: ‘Maybe Kevin and Winnie Ended Up Together After All’

The way The Wonder Years ended may have disappointed some fans, but star Danica McKellar is giving us reason to hope for a happy ending. (Cue up the Joe Cocker!)

In the 1993 series finale of the Emmy-winning ABC series, childhood sweethearts Kevin Arnold (played by Fred Savage) and Winnie Cooper (played by McKellar) went their separate ways, with Kevin revealing in voiceover that while he and Winnie stayed in touch in the years that followed, he married someone else and had a son. “Fans still get upset about it,” McKellar admitted on this week’s episode of the Pod Meets World podcast.

She explained that the ending was true to life, no matter how bittersweet it seemed at the time: “Most of our lives don’t turn out the way we wanted them too, or thought they were going to, so in that same way, Kevin and Winnie did not end up together.” But she doesn’t close the door on the iconic TV couple completely: “That’s only the beginning of the story. Personally, I am divorced and remarried, and a lot of people are. Maybe Kevin and Winnie ended up together after all.”
