'Wicked' director Jon M. Chu wants Britney Spears to be 'very involved' in upcoming biopic

"Wicked" director Jon M. Chu can't say too much about his upcoming Britney Spears biopic but revealed the pop star will play a part in the creative process.

Fresh off a Golden Globe win for "Wicked" for cinematic and box-office achievement, Chu told Entertainment Tonight that much is left in the air about the film but confirmed Spear's involvement is set in stone. "I haven't really started anything fully yet," Chu said. "She will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, an approach of things, but it's very very early."

When asked who will portray the "Gimme More" singer, Chu said he plans to consider a wide range of options.

"I've seen all the fan casting," he added. "And I always take that into consideration because maybe there's a good idea out there we'll have to see. We'll have to see what the approach of the movie is because we know who is right for it but I'm open for anything."

Universal Pictures purchased the film adaptation rights to Spear's 2023 memoir, where the former pop star opens up about the highs and lows of her stardom and upbringing, Deadline reported in August.

Chu also told Billboard before the Golden Globes that he's a "big fan" of Spears. "I've been a fan since I was young and she was young and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium," he continued. "So I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we'll see. We're developing it now and it’s a long road ahead."

Marc Platt, who accepted the Golden Globe alongside Chu Sunday night for his work in "Wicked," will also produce the biopic.

Jon M. Chu set to complete 'Wicked' sequel before Britney Spears' biopic

Before Chu can fully commit to the biopic, he will oversee the completion of the sequel "Wicked: For Good," which reportedly finished filming last year. The film, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is slated to release Nov. 21, 2025.

Following his win at Sunday's ceremony, Chu spoke about how meaningful his experience has been working on the musical blockbuster. "We love movies," Chu told reporters backstage. "The movies that are timeless that have been there our whole lives. And we wanted to make 'Wicked' feel like it's always been there on our shelf but we never picked it up and watched it."

Platt said the sequel will take his and Chu's focus for the rest of this year.

"When all is set and done we're going to get working on 'Wicked: For Good' which will take all of our attention, our heart and our soul and we're excited to bring that to you," he said.
