The Diplomat Season 3 First Look: See Bradley Whitford Join the Cast as Allison Janney’s Husband
Bradley Whitford and Allison Janney are reuniting at the White House.
Netflix has released the first photos from Season 3 of its political thriller The Diplomat, with Whitford joining his West Wing co-star Janney in the cast as Todd Penn, the First Gentleman to Janney’s newly appointed POTUS Grace Penn. The Diplomat is also created and executive-produced by West Wing alumna Debora Cahn.

In the new photos (which you can see below), Grace and Todd enjoy a drink together and, along with Kate and Hal, examine a tray of oysters that Todd appears to have injured himself preparing. It all seems casual and lighthearted… but we know that’s never the case too long on The Diplomat, with threats both foreign and domestic raging outside their doors.
The Diplomat, which has been nominated for one Primetime Emmy and three Golden Globes since its premiere in 2023, stars Keri Russell as UK ambassador Kate Wyler. The series also stars Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh.
On The West Wing, Janney played White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg, while Whitford portrayed Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman. Created by Aaron Sorkin, The West Wing aired on NBC from 1999 to 2006, chronicling the lives of President Josiah Barlett (Martin Sheen) and his senior staff.
Season 3 of The Diplomat is slated to hit Netflix later this year, and is expected to pick up where the Season 2 cliffhanger left off, with Janney’s character — formerly the shady Vice President — receiving the ultimate promotion following President Rayburn’s fatal heart attack.
