“The Walking Dead ”Spinoffs: A Complete Guide to Every Show in the Zombie-Run Universe (Including Where to Watch Them!)

The Walking Dead came to a close on Nov. 20, 2022, but its legacy lives on with its many spinoff series.

Fear the Walking Dead was the first iteration to be released in 2015, and The Walking Dead universe expanded even further with the franchise's only limited series, 2024's The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

The six-episode miniseries, which premiered on AMC and AMC+ on Feb. 25, 2024, answered the long-awaited question of what happened to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) after The Walking Dead season 11 finale. Netflix picked up the show on Jan. 13, and it quickly rose to the streamer's Top 10.

However, Rick and Michonne are far from the only characters who have received their own spinoffs. The post-finale fates of other fan-favorites like Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) have been explored in other series, offering a deeper look into their individual journeys.

Considering that the franchise's chief content officer Scott M. Gimple told TV Insider in March 2024 that The Walking Dead universe could "go on and on and on and on," future shows are possible. However, navigating where and how the current titles fit into the overall Walking Dead timeline can be confusing.

Fear the Walking Dead

Fear the Walking Dead was the first spinoff series to be released. It premiered in 2015 on AMC and ran for eight seasons before concluding in 2023.

Its first three seasons serve as a prequel to its parent show and chronicle the lives of a blended family in Los Angeles as they experience the start of a zombie apocalypse. Their normal lives quickly take a turn as an increasing number of people around them become stricken by the flesh-eating plague.

The remaining seasons run concurrently with TWD and even features crossovers with original characters, such as Morgan Jones and Negan's former right-hand man, Dwight.

The cast varies throughout its eight seasons because, in typical Walking Dead fashion, characters get killed off. Alycia Debnam Carey as Alicia Clark, Cliff Curtis as Travis Manawa, Frank Dillane as Nick Clark and Kim Dickens as Madison Clark are among the main cast with recurring appearances. Others include Jenna Elfman as June Dorie, Colman Domingo as Victor Strand and Mo Collins as Sarah Rabinowitz.

Fear the Walking Dead also has a few web-based spinoffs on AMC's website, including Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462, Fear the Walking Dead: Passage and The Althea Tapes.

Tales of the Walking Dead

Tales of the Walking Dead premiered on AMC in August 2022 as the third spinoff of the original show and an anthology series that highlights new and returning characters from the TWD franchise.

Unlike other spinoffs with cohesive storylines throughout the seasons, Tales of the Walking Dead tells the individual stories of new characters in each episode, which then tie into the larger story within the TWD universe.

Each episode takes place in a different location and is titled after the character it highlights — some of whom are portrayed by big names like Terry Crews, Olivia Munn, Parker Posey, Jillian Bell and Samantha Morton, who plays TWD villain Alpha.

The show's timeline spans from pre-apocalyptic times to several years beyond the original Walking Dead time period.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

The long-awaited reunion of TWD's Michonne and Rick finally hit the small screen in February 2024. AMC originally announced the spinoff as a trilogy movie in 2018, but it was later reimagined as a six-episode miniseries titled The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

As TWD fans will recall, Rick was presumed dead after blowing up a bridge to save the Alexandria community in season 9. Michonne, who is left to raise their daughter and son alone, never believed he was gone, and sets out on a journey to find him in season 10. Viewers get one final glimpse into where these pivotal characters ended up in a flash-forward scene during the series finale.

The Ones Who Live fills in the gaps of what happened to Rick and Michonne during the final three seasons of TWD — and how they finally reunite after years apart.

During a Television Critic's Association panel for AMC in February 2024, Lincoln said that to prep for the "most romantic Walking Dead show" to date he and Gurira binged the Bridgerton series.

"This has been a long time coming, this story, and I love this character and this is a love story," the actor said. "This is essentially the DNA of the original episode was a man in search of his family"

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is available to stream on Sling TV, Philo, Netflix and AMC+.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premiered on AMC in September 2023 as the continuation of everyone's favorite ill-tempered hunter. The spinoff takes place after the series finale of TWD and follows Daryl's arrival (and survival) in post-apocalyptic France.

Fans of his slow-burn friendship with Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) were thrilled to see her return in the series' second season after it was announced in April 2022 that the actress wouldn't be starring in Daryl Dixon because she couldn't relocate to Europe. The cast also includes Harry Potter alum Clémence Poésy and Chernobyl's Adam Nagaitis.

A trailer for the third season, set to premiere sometime in 2025, was released in November 2024.

The Walking Dead: Dead City

The Walking Dead: Dead City marked the franchise's fourth spinoff. It was originally titled Isle of the Dead, but AMC changed the name to Dead City before its June 2023 premiere.

As for its plot, Dead City serves as a direct sequel to TWD's original series, with Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprising their characters Maggie and Negan, respectively, in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan.

During an interview with Deadline, Morgan hinted that Dead City takes place "a couple of years after the Walking Dead finale."

"These characters are going to have a hard time functioning around each other, which is why I wanted to do Dead City so much by the way," he said. "I just thought it was fascinating that you got two characters that kind of hate each other, having to find a way to work together."

Season 2 is set to premiere in 2025 on AMC and AMC+.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

The Walking Dead: World Beyond was the second spinoff of TWD, with the first episode premiering on AMC in 2020 and wrapping in December 2021 after two seasons.

Set in Nebraska 10 years after the zombie apocalypse, the series chronicles the lives of teenagers who are the first generation to come of age in a post-apocalyptic era. The location is a subtle nod to TWD's season 2 episode titled "Nebraska." In addition, more light is shed on the Civic Republic Military which was introduced in the original series.

The World Beyond plot places its aim on the next generation of survivors, characters who were most likely too young to recount the pre-plague world. Aliyah Royale as Iris, Alexa Mansour as Hope, Hal Cumpston as Silas and Nicolas Cantu as Elton play the four main characters.

Other cast members include Nico Tortorella as Felix, Julia Ormond as Elizabeth Kublek, Annet Mahendru as Huck and Joe Holt as Leo. Season 2 also sees some crossover characters from TWD such as Jeff Kober as an uncredited voice in season 1 and Pollyanna McIntosh as Jadis Stokes in season 2 of TWD: World Beyond.

The first season of The Walking Dead: World Beyond is available to stream on Sling TV and both seasons are available on AMC+.
