Will Trent’s Ramón Rodríguez Tees Up Season 3 Premiere — Plus, Meet Faith’s New Partner in Exclusive Sneak Peek
To paraphrase Barney Stinson, nothing suits Will Trent quite like a three-piece suit. But Tuesday’s Season 3 opener (ABC, 8/7c) introduces a new Will — a more laidback Will — and a whole new look.
It has been several months since Will arrested Angie, and he has started a new life for himself — details of which we’re not at liberty to disclose. But when it comes to his wardrobe, we can reveal that the (former?) Special Agent now prioritizes comfort over style. He’s also rocking some serious stubble.

As series star/executive producer Ramón Rodríguez puts it, “Will has taken some time to get away, to reflect, to be alone… to walk away from anything that he has known.” That includes his career, his relationships… even the way he presents himself to the world. With Will’s suits, “there’s an immediate posture and rigidness.” Now, “he’s just a t-shirt, jeans and boots guy, you know? It’s a different kind of feel. The shoulders relax.”
During his time in self-imposed exile, Will has “pushed past certain things that he normally doesn’t” — for instance, he has gotten a lot more comfortable being open about his dyslexia — “why is why we’re able to introduce him in a new way at the top of Season 3, where he’s somebody who is not so rigid.” It also helps that no one knows him where he’s wandered off to — and, as Rodríguez points out vis-à-vis Angie, “he hasn’t dealt with stuff because he’s running from it.”
Before long, though, Amanda shows up on Will’s doorstep. The deputy director tells him that the bureau needs his help, and it’s time to come back. But Will isn’t so sure that he still belongs there. What’s more, “he’s not sure if he wants to be GBI anymore.”
Will Trent Season 3: Everything We Know
As previously spoiled in the Season 3 trailer, Will gives in and makes his way back to Atlanta — and TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek at his arrival reveals that things are not as he left them. For starters, his former cohort Faith Mitchell has a new partner, Special Agent Gross (played by Big Little Lies and Superman & Lois vet Douglas Smith), and she doesn’t exactly seem pleased to see Trent after all this time.
“His impulse at the end of Season 2 was to just take Betty and leave — and maybe, you know, put down the burden of being Will Trent for a while,” co-showrunner Liz Heldens tells TVLine. “He abandoned Nico and Angie, and Faith and Amanda, and they’re all kind of pissed off at him. He’s going to have to do a lot of work in Season 3 to get back [in everyone’s good graces].”
Rodríguez directed Will Trent’s Season 3 premiere, which airs Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8/7c on ABC (and streams next day on Hulu). Watch a sneak peek, then hit the comments and share your hopes for Season 3.
