Susan Lucci Reveals Her Favorite of Erica Kane’s 8 “All My Children” Husbands: ‘So Many Men, So Little Time’
Lucci's character racked up nearly as many husbands as the actress did Daytime Emmy nominations
In her 40-plus-year run on All My Children, Susan Lucci’s character Erica Kane racked up nearly as many husbands as the actress did Daytime Emmy nominations.
Ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Lucci was famously nominated 18 times before finally scoring a win in 1999, with two more nominations following in 2001 and 2002. But in true soap opera fashion, her character did have a similarly impressive number of spouses: between 1971 and 2007, Erica was married 11 times to eight different men, some of whom she divorced and later remarried — and divorced again.
With so many fictional hubbies, you’d think it would be hard to pick a favorite. But Lucci, 78, did just that during a Jan. 14 conversation with Andy Cohen at New York City’s 92NY marking All My Children’s 55th anniversary.

During a Q&A portion of the event, Cohen read a question from a fan asking Lucci who her character’s favorite husband was.
“So many men, so little time,” the actress joked, adding that she’d worked with “a wonderful group of men” during her time on the show.

Lucci said that her character’s mother Mona (played by Frances Heflin) preferred Erica’s third husband Tom Cudahy (played by Richard Shoberg). The two married in the early ’80s, but the marriage was later annulled.
“She really was rooting for him,” Lucci said of her TV mom.
For her part, Lucci said she was partial to the eighth and final man to walk Erica down the aisle: Walt Willey’s Jackson “Jack” Montgomery.
Lucci’s character began a long-running, tortured, on-again-off-again romance with Jack in the late ’80s while married to his brother — her sixth husband — Travis (Larkin Malloy). Their affair continued as Erica’s marriage to Travis was twice declared invalid. Several marriages, remarriages and plenty general soap operatics later, Erica and Jack got engaged in the late ’90s, only for Jack to break things off after he discovered that Erica slept with her back-from-the-dead fifth husband Mike Roy (Nicolas Surovy).

Erica and Jack finally married in 2005, only to divorce two years later. But Lucci’s character continued to carry a torch for Jack, declaring her love to him in All My Children’s final episode on ABC.
“Jack Montgomery was the one who wouldn’t leave and couldn’t get out of her life, and she couldn't walk away from him,” Lucci said during the Q&A. “Although at the end, she was in the crosshairs of that rifle going after Jack because she had left him again. Yeah, I guess Jack.”
As Lucci noted, things didn’t end well for her character. Her final appearance on All My Children in 2011 ended with Erica chasing after Jack only to be apparently shot and killed by another character — though the show's cliffhanger ending left that open to interpretation.
If Erica did die at the end of All My Children's network run — the character did not appear in the show's short-lived 2013 revival on The Online Network — it certainly cannot be said that she didn't live life to the fullest. Along with Tom, Travis, Mike and Jack, she was also married at various points to Jeff Martin (Charles Frank), Phil Brent (Nicholas Benedict), Adam Chandler (David Canary) and Dimitri Marick (Michael Nadar).
