Sunrise's Nat Barr laughs off awkward 25-year interview: 'Oh no!'

Sunrise star Nat Barr was left red-faced on Tuesday morning after the breakfast show re-aired her infamous 1997 interview with NRL legend Matthew Johns.

The interview, which took place following the Newcastle Knights’ first-ever premiership win, birthed the memorable phrase ‘Better than Lego’.

“This year marks 25 years since one of the all-time greatest interviews,” David ‘Kochie’ Koch said as he introduced the clip to viewers.

“Our very own Natalie Barr was in Newcastle following the Knights’ maiden rugby league premiership win. She spoke to the grand final heroes Matthew and Andrew Johns in a chat that would create the iconic phrase ‘Better than Lego’.”

“The party is still continuing, it just has never stopped, really,” she says. “And I don’t think, as you can see, I don’t think it will stop until at least next Saturday they’re telling me, about a week of partying.

“With me, we’ve got Andrew Johns in the background, but Matthew here. Tell us a bit about what the feeling was like coming home to Newcastle last night?”

“Um, it was better than, ah… It was better than Lego,” he responded while looking directly into the camera.

“It was better than Lego. It was better than Lego!”

‘Stop it!’

Watching the interview back in Brekky Studio this week, Nat put her face in her hands and laughed alongside her colleagues.

Kochie then revealed that Budgy Smuggler has launched a line of ‘Better Than’ merchandise to celebrate the milestone anniversary.

“Oh no! Stop it! No!” Nat said as she tried on the bucket hat emblazoned with Matthew’s face. “Oh, I love it! That is so great, oh my god! Oh and it kind of matches my outfit! Oh, guys, this is so great.

“Gee, I had no idea. I won’t even tell you what the other Johns brother was yelling in the background. It had something to do with my last name. They had been going all night and I was a very green journo.”

‘So funny’

A number of viewers took to the comments after the video was shared on social media to praise the memorable interview.

“Soo cute Nat,” one person wrote, followed by another added, “The same wonderful Nat!”.

“So funny,” a third shared, while plenty of fans simply left laughing emojis.

“I want to know what Andrew was yelling in the background,” someone else remarked.
