Selena Gomez Reveals How Costars Martin Short and Steve Martin Reacted to Her Engagement to Benny Blanco
The actress also shared that she thought it would be "adorable" if her two 'Only Murders' costars could play a role in her wedding with Blanco
Selena Gomez can always count on support from her Only Murders in the Building costars Martin Short and Steve Martin.
A day after a clip went viral showing Short gushing over her new engagement ring at the 2025 Golden Globes, Gomez revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! what exactly transpired during the moment.
“He’s twisting it. Taking it off,” the Emilia Pérez star, 32, recalled on the show Monday, Jan. 6, as they played the clip for the audience. “I wasn’t sure what he was doing; that's why I look confused.”
“Is he appraising it? What exactly is he doing there?” host Jimmy Kimmel inquired.
“He just wanted to know what was going on. I don’t think he cared. Maybe a little ... ” she said with a laugh, while miming a drinking motion.

Kimmel, 57, then asked Gomez if her new fiancé Benny Blanco called her Only Murders costars and asked them for permission to propose — something that Gomez confirmed he did not do.
She jokingly added that she “had the feeling” that Short, 74, “wasn’t very happy about that,” and that he “gave us a bit of jokes here and there.”

As for what Martin, 79, thought of the engagement, Gomez revealed that he sent a sweet message to her: “Steve made sure he sent my assistant an email so my assistant could tell me congratulations."
“That’s how he communicates,” the actress and singer joked of her costar. “He always tries to be polite. And it’s very kind, but it’s okay to send a little text.”
The late-night host then asked whether Gomez would consider giving her two costars and friends “jobs” in her upcoming wedding to Blanco, 36, including as “ringbearers” — especially given Short’s fascination with her engagement ring.
She shared that she wouldn’t be opposed to the idea, saying, “That would be adorable.”
A day after Gomez shared the news of her engagement to Blanco last month, the Father of the Bride actor also shared his best wishes to the star on social media, posting a photo of himself, Short and Gomez alongside the caption, "Congratulations to Benny and Selena, from her two weird uncles."
