Selena Gomez Has Admitted That “Some Of The Magic Has Disappeared” From “Emilia Pérez” Amid Her Costar Karla Sofía Gascón’s Offensive Tweets
By now, you’re probably aware of all of the drama surrounding the star of Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofía Gascón, but if you’re not, here’s a quick recap of the situation.
At the end of January, journalist Sarah Hagi unearthed a whole host of seriously problematic tweets that Karla sent between 2020 until as recently as this year.
The tweets were posted in Karla’s native Spanish, but the translations were incredibly damning, with Karla repeatedly expressing anti-Muslim sentiment, targeting diversity at the Oscars, and even making some wildly offensive statements about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Another tweet that was widely circulated saw Karla take aim at her Emilia Pérez costar Selena Gomez, although its legitimacy is under question.
According to the Latin Times, the alleged post was shared in 2022.
In it, Karla allegedly quote-tweeted a news story about Selena and Hailey Bieber and apparently wrote in Spanish: “She's a rich rat who plays the poor bastard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife.”
While the tweet doesn’t name Selena specifically, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who it would be about.
However, in one of her multiple statements about the social media scandal, Karla appeared to suggest that this tweet had been fabricated.
After insisting that she is “not a racist” and claiming “they have already won, they have achieved their objective, to stain my existence with lies or things taken out of context,” Karla added: “They have created posts as if it were me insulting even my colleagues.”
It’s worth noting that while the Selena tweet is under question, the other problematic tweets associated with Karla’s X account were very clearly real — though she has since deactivated her profile.
And despite Karla insisting in an interview with CNN en Español that both Selena and her other high-profile costar Zoe Saldaña support her “200%,” there is evidence to suggest that the majority of the Emilia Pérez cast and crew actually feel less than supportive toward Karla.
First of all, Zoe reflected on the situation during a Q&A on Jan. 31, where she said: “It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.”
“I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity,” she went on. “And it just saddens me. It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now.”
When asked about Karla’s “200%” comment in an upcoming episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Zoe apparently took “a long blink,” and reiterated: “I do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for.”
Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez’s director, Jacques Audiard, did not hold back as he condemned Karla’s behavior in an interview with Deadline on Feb. 5.
"It's very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía," he began. “The exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set was indeed based on trust. And when you have that kind of relationship, and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course, that relationship is affected.”
Jacques also branded Karla’s defiant response to the tweets being exposed as “self-destructive” and said that she was “playing the victim,” going on to confirm: “I haven’t spoken to her and don’t want to.”
“I don't understand it, and what I don't understand about this, too, is why she's harming people who were very close to her,” Jacques went on. “I’m thinking in this thing of how hurting others, of how she's hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I'm thinking of myself, I'm thinking of Zoe and Selena. I just don't understand why she's continuing to harm us."
This comment was no doubt in reference to the detrimental effect Karla’s tweets may have had on Emilia Pérez’s Oscars campaign, with the movie being nominated for no less than 13 Academy Awards in spite of being heavily criticized by audiences for its representation (or lack thereof) of the Mexican community.
Karla herself made history as the first openly trans actor to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar, but she is no longer expected to stand a chance of winning — with Netflix even cutting ties with her by refusing to fund her attendance at any future awards shows or events for Emilia Pérez.
And now, Selena has broken her silence on the whole thing — and admitted that Karla has somewhat tainted her Emilia Pérez experience.
When asked how she was doing amid the controversy at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday night, Selena said: “I’m really good.”
“Some of the magic has disappeared,” she then confessed. “But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just… I’m just grateful and live with no regrets.”
Selena concluded by reiterating: “I would do this movie over and over again if I could,” which triggered applause from the crowd.
Needless to say, I’d love to know how Selena really feels about the alleged “rich rat” tweet, but I have to admire her dignified public response.
