Selena Gomez appeared to make a backhanded comment about Emilia Pérez co-star Karla Sofía Gascón, who has drawn rebuke for disparaging posts about George Floyd and Muslims on social media.

Gomez said that she had “no regrets” about appearing in the film but admitted that some of the hype around the movie—which received a record-breaking number of nominations for this year’s Oscars—had evaporated in light of the controversy.

”Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful and live with no regrets,” Gomez said at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Sunday.

“I would do this movie over and over again if I could,” she added.

Months before filming was set to begin for Emilia Pérez, Gascón described Gomez as a “rich rat” who “will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend,” Justin Bieber, in since-deleted posts.

Gascón’s comments about everything from burkas to Black Lives Matter protests stunned the movie industry after journalist Sarah Hagi re-surfaced them.

In one post at the end of 2020, Gascón commented on a Muslim family with a woman wearing a burka.

“Islam is marvelous, without any machismo,” she wrote. “Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”

In another post, Gascón called victim of police violence George Floyd a “drug addict swindler.”

Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard told Deadline last week that her posts made him “very sad” and condemned her comments as “absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated.”

“Of course, that relationship is affected,” he said. “It’s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable.”

Co-star Zoe Saldaña said she was also “disappointed” to learn about Gascón’s controversial remarks.

“All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here,” she told Variety.

Gascón responded to the revelations with several statements on social media as well as in an emotional appearance on CNN en Español.

In one post, she said she wanted to apologize to all those whom she had “caused hurt.”

“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,” she said. “All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

After Audiard spoke to Deadline, she posted on Instagram that she would be silent on the matter as she wanted to “let the work talk for itself.”

The movie is expected to sweep up a host of awards at the Oscars despite facing criticism in Mexico and objections from LGBTQ+ group GLAAD, which said the movie offered a “profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman.”

Netflix has scaled back Gascón’s appearance in promotional materials while PR reps have scrambled to cancel her attendance at various events.
