Sebastian Stan Says He Misses Anthony Mackie ‘Daily’ and Teases Whether He Will Appear in “Captain America 4”

Stan is set to reprise his Marvel character in the upcoming movie 'Thunderbolts*'

Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie are friendship goals!

The 2024 Golden Globe winner, 42, told Variety in a recent interview that he misses working with his The Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-star.

When Stan was asked if he will appear in Captain America: Brave New World, set to hit theaters on Feb. 14, he noted that he has been preoccupied filming upcoming Marvel movie Thunderbolts*.

"[Filming] Thunderbolts*, let me tell you, it was a much quieter year for me because I didn’t see Anthony Mackie," the actor teased. "So, I’ll say that. Although I miss Anthony Mackie like daily, and it’s something I don’t like to admit."

The two have co-starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. More recently, they reprised their respective superhero roles in the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier with Stan playing Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier and Mackie playing Sam Wilson/The Falcon. At the end of the series, Wilson assumes the role of Captain America following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

It is unclear if Stan will appear in the fourth Captain America movie – which is the first standalone movie for Mackie's character.

Speaking of Thunderbolts*, Stan told Variety, "It’s a weird group thrown together, and I think people are going to love it."

The movie is also set to star Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, all of whom will reprise their respective roles from the MCU. Additionally, Deadline previously reported that Harrison Ford will reprise his character, Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, from the new Captain America movie.

As for now, Stan is preoccupied navigating the ongoing awards season, following the buzzy release of his two latest movies, A Different Man and The Apprentice.

On Jan. 5, he accepted the Golden Globe award for best performance by a leading actor in a musical or comedy film for A Different Man, in which he plays a man who fakes his death after his disfiguring facial condition is fixed overnight by an experimental medical treatment.

During his acceptance speech, he said, "Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now. We have to normalize it and continue to expose ourselves to it, and our children, encourage acceptance. One way we can do that is by continuing to champion stories that are inclusive."

Mackie crashed Stan’s backstage interview with Entertainment Tonight following his win in what has now become a viral moment.

He entered the scene, chanting, "We won! We won!"

"It’s a team effort," Stan said with a smile. "Captain America and the Winter Soldier. We’re coming back! … I do have to thank Anthony [Mackie] because, actually, back in the day when we were starting these press tours, they said, 'This kid can’t talk, can’t smile, can’t say anything. We gotta put him with Anthony to get some life in him.' "

He then told Mackie, "Maybe I learned from you. You have to keep smiling."
