You might have seen the term “pheromone perfume” floating around the beauty zeitgeist lately, but what does that actually mean? And is it possible to actually attract a lover to you based on the scent you’re emitting out into the ether? Well, like most scientific theories, it turns out the findings are mixed.
“A pheromone is a chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behavior or physiology of others of its species,” explains perfumer Darryl Do of Delbia Do Fragrances. “The goal [of pheromone perfumes is] to create a perfume that acts like a pheromone in the hopes of attracting a recipient. This exists in the animal kingdom, specifically mammals.” However, scientists are still inconclusive about whether or not human mammals actually possess and emit pheromones in natural body odors through sweat and other emissions.
