Scott Cam reveals secret to winning The Block as 2024 production kicks off

'They never listen.'

With production for The Block’s milestone twentieth season currently underway, host Scott Cam has revealed what he believes to be the secret to winning the renovation reality series.

Scott, who has hosted the popular Channel Nine program since 2010, told The Spinoff that the only way teams can ensure success when building a house is to manage their budget.

“That’s what I tell them every year, and they never listen,” he remarked.

Scott went on to say that while the show has gotten more dramatic over the years, with plenty of cheating scandals, alliances and rivalries keeping viewers entertained, producers never orchestrate the drama themselves.

“Our style is to leave them to their own devices with eight cameras, and just follow stories as they pan out,” he detailed.

“I think it’s a bit Lord of the Flies. Someone ends up being Piggy.”

Scott added that none of the teams are ever set up to fail and he hates when fans accuse him of playing favourites.

“I say on day one: we all want you to make money and do it well. We all want you to have a life-changing moment,” he said.

The Block 2024

The Block’s executive producer Julian Cress recently announced that season 20 will be filmed on Phillip Island, which is located 90 minutes south of Melbourne.

The island, which is well known for its colony of little penguins, is a popular tourist destination visited by 3.5 million people annually and has a permanent population of around 14,000.

The show was originally set to take place in the country Victorian town of Daylesford but was forced to relocate in September due to permit issues and complaints from locals.

Channel Nine recently confirmed at their annual Upfront event that Scott Cam will be returning to host the show, while Neale Whitaker announced on Instagram in July that he will be back as a full-time judge for season 20.

Casting is currently underway for the new season, however, there is potential for the new season to feature the return of some past contestants.

An insider tells Yahoo Lifestyle: “There is still some chatter about bringing back some celebrated contestants for the 20th season but applications are still open for newbies. So the rumour is it will be half newbies and half returnees.”
