Scandi-chic outfits to recreate, inspired by the Copenhagen fashion crowd

Copenhagen remains the most elusive location of fashion week. Like the cooler, younger sister of the more established fashion capitals, the Danish city sits back and lets her style do the talking without making a fuss.

The increasing influence of Scandinavian brands such as Ganni, Cecilie Bahnsen, Acne and BITE Studio are cementing the capital as the authority in what's considered cool, highlighting emerging brands and designers as well as pulling influence from youth culture.

But it's not just the runways that hold the key to Copenhagen's powerful pull. In a classic chicken-and-the-egg fashion conundrum, it's sometimes hard to distinguish whether it's Copenhagen's street style that influences the season's shows, or the other way round. It appears to be both; a natural symbiosis exists between the two that allows for an organic breeding ground of creativity in the Scandinavian fashion sphere. The result is that the Copenhagen fashion crowd have cultivated an achingly cool style that the rest of us seek to emulate.

The good news is that the bi-annual event of Copenhagen Fashion Week gives us the opportunity to gaze and take notes on this season's Scandinavian style. Below, find our favourite outfits from CPFW attendees and shop our edit of inspired pieces.

Dressing for our winter isn't easy, but the Copenhagen fashion set are navigating even lower temperatures with effortless aplomb, so we'll have to rescind our complaints on this one. This outfit switches out the traditionally British long-line trench coat silhouette for a shorter design with more oversized proportions (this particular one is The Frankie Shop's Alberta short trench), styling it with turned up cuffs and a pair of knee-high chunky boots.

Double denim

Double denim might have adopted the 'Canadian tuxedo' moniker, but Copenhagen delivers superior inspiration when it comes to styling it. This look layers shirts on shirts, allowing a statement poplin design to peek out from beneath the denim. When it comes to jeans, the more relaxed the style, the more your look will assume a Scandi approach. Loose turn-ups, barrel jeans and floor-skimming wide-leg styles are all Copenhagen wardrobe staples; it's safe to say you needn't live in fear of the return of the skinny jean if you follow their lead.

Vivid tonals

Do as the Scandinavians do: when the weather goes grey, go bright. The Copenhagen crowd isn't afraid of embracing the brightest hues, from verdant greens to rich reds, and you'll often see them sporting a head-to-toe tonal ensemble, or clashing eclectic prints with bold contrasting patterns. Powder yellows and baby pinks have been tapped as this season's trending shades on the autumn/winter 2024 runways, but as this outfit shows, red remains a forever classic. Mix in matching accessories with touches of black to ground the look.

Speaking of baby pinks, Copenhagen street style can look like veritable pick'n'mix of fashion, with lemon-drop yellows, sugar shrimp pinks, bon bon blues in abundance, and rarely styled solitarily. The true key to Scandinavian style is to not be afraid with mixing hues, patterns and textures, so let go of any stiff British rules of dressing you may be harbouring and embrace your inner child. If this seems overwhelming, start with investing in more colourful accessories and work your way inward, moving onto pastel-hued outerwear and then to jumpers, so on and so forth.

Extreme contrasting

The Copenhagen fashion set loves to play around with contrasts, with one part of the outfit often sitting in opposition to the other. You'll often find show attendees bundled up with jackets on their top half, whilst braving a skirt and bare legs on the bottom. Opt for lug-sole knee-high boots for a more casual day look or where the weather warrants a bit more stability on foot.

Staple separates

As with all good styling, the Scandinavian wardrobe is built on the bones of minimalist staples. Invest in pieces such as white T-shirts, vest tops, leather pieces and versatile denim and you'll find there's endless styling opportunities that come with them. And while Copenhagen style is known for going big — whether thats with proportions or colours — they're also masterful when it comes to putting together an effortless yet sleek look. Again, accessories are key to making this outfit look polished rather than half-finished, so don't forget a pair of modern sunglasses (elongated, aviator or wrap-around styles are the Scandi favourites), a classic leather bag, and shoes that provide a point of interest.

Biscuit layering

Oatmeal, custard creams, bourbon biscuits — these aren't just the ideal tea-time accompaniments, they're also the shades you should consider incorporating into your wardrobe. These neutral hues work wonderfully when layered with each other and make for versatile pieces that are easy to restyle in a variety of looks. The undemanding nature of these shades mean you can play around with textures and tailoring, incorporating different fabrics and styles into the same look without an overstimulating result.
