The Hobart-born royal went largely unnoticed during her Sydney trip, but what was lurking metres behind her should have given her away.

She’s arguably one of the most famous Australians in the world, but Queen Mary appeared to go completely unnoticed by members of the public during a recent outing in Sydney. The Hobart-born royal, who is married to King Frederik of Denmark, made a surprise visit to Australia this week alongside her 13-year-old daughter, Princess Josephine.

Photos show Mary and Josephine joined by her friend Amber Petty, who was a bridesmaid at her royal wedding in 2004, as they hiked Sydney's famous Bondi to Bronte coastal walk and checked out the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition. The 56-year-old tried her best to go incognito in an all-black ensemble with a navy blue cap and a pair of sunglasses.

Matrix Media CEO Ben McDonald, who took the photos, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that what they don't show is that Mary completed her beach walk and even went shopping at a boutique in Paddington without anyone recognising or approaching her.

“She even walked all along Mackenzies Bay with her daughter and went unnoticed,” he says. “She passed a lot of people and no one noticed! They had no idea a Queen was in their midst.”

But one thing in particular that should have given Queen Mary away - the considerable security team following “about 10 feet behind her”. There were around seven Australian and Danish security guards in her vicinity, each wearing RM Williams boots and bum bags.

While Mary was driven around in a Mercedes-Benz station wagon by her friend Amber, the security guards travelled around her in at least two cars when she headed off.

It’s since been confirmed that King Frederik has stayed in Denmark, with the Danish royals sharing photos of him at the University of Copenhagen. Meanwhile, Crown Prince Christian is currently in East Africa on an extended ‘gap year’ experience until December, and it’s unknown if Prince Vincent and Princess Isabella are also in Australia.
