Peter Helliar shares honest thoughts on The Project's mass exodus: 'Surprise'

The comedian has spoken candidly about his exit from the Channel 10 show.

Almost four months after saying goodbye to The Project, Peter Helliar has opened up about his exit and the dramatic ‘mass exodus’ the Channel 10 show experienced late last year.

Peter, who is currently filming I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, quit the current affairs programme within a few weeks of Lisa Wilkinson and Carrie Bickmore's departures.

Speaking with news.com.au the day before he headed into the jungle, the comedian shared an insight into what it was like behind the scenes on The Project when so many people were leaving.

“Lisa probably took us a bit by surprise,” he said, adding that he “completely understood” why the former Today host left following backlash over her actions during the Brittany Higgins and Bruce Lehrmann trial.

“She’d had a really rough year, and I really admire her putting her family first and taking some time away.”

Peter added that he and Lisa had a “kind of funny” conversation when she texted him a heads up that she was leaving and he told her he would be announcing his own exit two days later.

Meanwhile, Peter revealed that Carrie’s departure was much less of a shock because they had already had discussions about their TV futures.

“When Carrie told me, that was the thing that made me think, ‘Okay, this is probably a good time [for me] to go’,” he said.

He also told the publication that he has no regrets about leaving The Project and he enjoys having the capacity to pursue other creative endeavours.
