Peter Helliar announced as the host of all new Family Feud: 'Pure fun'

It’s one of the world’s most popular game shows, and now Family Feud is returning to Australia in the form of a podcast.

Comedian Peter Helliar has been announced as the host for the brand new project, joining a long line of legendary presenters who have previously fronted the series including Daryl Somers, Rob Brough, Bert Newton and Grant Denyer.

“Basically, it’s all the fun of the Family Feud TV show, it’s just audible,” Peter tells Yahoo Lifestyle about the podcast from ARN’s iHeartPodcast Network.

“I’m really excited because it’s pure fun, it’s pure joy and it's not trying to be anything it’s not. It's nice to play in a space where you can forget the world for about half an hour and just have a laugh and listen in on some mates playing a silly game.”

The Project star explains that in addition to the format change, each episode of the new series will feature two celebrities “playing for the honour of their family”.

“The prize isn’t big cash, I won’t pretend it is,” he adds with a laugh. “In one episode they’re competing for bear repellent, so that's the level we're playing at.

“But what was amazing for me was to see just how competitive the celebrities got when they were playing the game. It was really fun to be the ringmaster of that.”

The podcast will feature a number of well-known Australian comedians, actors, musicians and chefs, including Osher Günsberg, Tony Armstrong, Tom Gleeson, Pia Miranda, Nazeem Hussain, Meshel Laurie, Matt Preston and Jessica Mauboy.

“Jessica Mauboy is one of the most loved performers and every time I've spent time with her, I just know that whether it’s six minutes or half an hour, it's going to be a glorious kind of ray of sunshine in my life,” he says.

“But you put her in the Family Feud studio and something feral happens with Jessica Mauboy, I have to say. The gloves are off and she wants to win.”

The Project host Waleed Aly is also set to compete on the podcast following what Peter calls his “pathetic” appearance on All Star Family Feud in 2016 alongside Carrie Bickmore and Steve Price.

“We went into that game pretty cocky because we were up against the cast of Neighbours and we thought we had them covered,” Peter recalls.

“We ended up losing by a record margin in Family Feud history and Carrie, Steve and I still blame Waleed for overthinking it. But he gets his shot at redemption in this!”

Family Feud The Podcast is available now via the iHeart app or wherever you get your podcasts.
