The Country Bear Musical Jamboree has officially opened at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park in Florida — and, despite reports to the contrary, one of the show's original characters remains.

Liver Lips McGrowl — one of the 18 original animatronics featured in the Country Bear Jamboree for over 50 years — has been renamed Romeo McGrowl in the updated show. McGrowl's appearance has also changed, with the animatronic now sporting a blonde hairdo.

A source tells PEOPLE that McGrowl’s name change is just a part of the larger refurbishment of the show and the animatronic bears that began in January 2024.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “liver lips” is considered offensive and derogatory, though the source did not specify if that was the reason for the name change.

The Country Bear Musical Jamboree is a show that features animatronic bears that perform a variety show. The attraction was previously called the Country Bear Jamboree and was one of the original attractions when Walt Disney World first opened back in 1971.

The original Country Bear Jamboree held its final showing back in January and was closed for major updates and renovations to the animatronic bears and the show before reopening on Wednesday, July 17.

New updates to the original show include new costuming for the bears, a new script and a new musical set of classic Disney songs sung in a country-western fashion.

According to Variety, the new songs are sung by Americana singers Mac McAnally, Allison Russell, Chris Thile and The Voice’s season 9 finalist Emily Ann Roberts.

“I first saw the Country Bears as a teenage musician and it bolstered my pride in the acoustic musical heritage of the rural South,” McAnally said in a statement to Variety. “ It is my great blessing to get to be a part of the continuation of the tradition and I have done my best to honor the spirit of the Bears and the great Disney songbook as well as the heart and soul that runs through the veins of country music. And just maybe it explains why I’ve been singing in a Bear voice for several decades before this opportunity came up.”
