Mum's 'bargain' Bluey find erupts in massive online row about stealing: 'I’d be embarrassed'

A Big W shopper has caused a major uproar online after sharing a Bluey toy that she got for a steal - literally, some might say.

With the cost-of-living never far from our thoughts, it's only natural that we're all on the lookout for a good bargain these days. It's also only natural that we want to share these bargain finds with our fellow Aussies because we're all in this together, right?

Well, one mum might be regretting her willingness to share after her post in a bargain hunters group faced tremendous backlash, with some members going so far as to accuse her of 'stealing'. While others were more forgiving, the general consensus was that this shopper had scammed the system and her 'score' was nothing to brag about.

"Someone must have put these Bluey Ute’s on the shelf in the wrong spot. $8 seemed wrong in my head, so I scanned on the app," the poster wrote in the online group. "Took pictures, took it to the desk and showed the lady working. They radioed for someone to check, and sure enough I got this $39 Bluey Ute for only $8!!!!"

The poster included photos of the item in question and her receipt - showing that she had, indeed, paid only $8 for the popular toy. The photo also showed that the $8 shelf ticket was clearly for a completely different item.

At any rate, her jubilant post was not received in the way she likely expected it to be.

"Taking 5 seconds to read the $8 price point would have given you your answer that it is indeed not $8 but someone’s left it in the wrong spot," one person wrote. "Not a markdown at all and you’re lucky they honoured it as they’ve clearly been pushed over to the wrong spot probably by a customer. I wouldn’t call that a win I’d call that embarrassing."

"So all I have to do is put multiple things in the wrong spot on a shelf, take photos and get it for a cheaper price????," another wrote. "Is that why it’s called getting it at a steal?"

"So you moved 3 products over and the teenage girl couldn't be bothered arguing with you. Wow what a great win," someone else sarcastically said.

"I wouldn’t be bragging," another shopper said. "This is so unkind to businesses. You can read what the price tag says and it’s clearly not the tradies Ute."

"Wow! Can’t you read?? Clearly wrong sign," someone fumed. "I really dislike customers like yourself!! Just always scamming for a discount! I’d be embarrassed to post this not proud!! I reckon you just put it there and took a photo to scam!!"

One person even weighed in with their own experience working in a big retailers saying, "As someone who used to work in retail (not big w but still big store) I literally did not get paid enough to deal with the potential situation that could've occurred from that customer demanding it at that price so I used to approve most mark downs."

They continued, "Getting $20 an hour to be yelled at by other full grown adults doesn't not even come close to being enough. it's not stealing if the manager chooses to honour the discounted price, they can refuse and move the merchandise but instead they let her have it at that price omg some of these comments are ridiculous."

Her comment that it wasn't stealing was echoed by several other members of the group who agreed the shopper had simply nabbed herself a bargain in a time where money is tight for everyone.

"Why is everyone so upset over this Mumma getting a good discount from a multi billionaire company?" one person asked.

"For everyone saying she's stealing get a grip," wrote someone else. "How is it stealing if more then [sic] one of the item is under the wrong tag it has to be honoured I say great score mumma, well done."

"The way people are calling this stealing from big w?? Really? In this cost of living crisis?" another argued.

"Why y'all on the big companies side... if she'd managed to get them all at $8 I'd be happy for her!!," said another. "Hope who ever that's going to enjoys it. Good score!"
