Michelle Yeoh tells“ The View ”that “Wicked” cast is 'crying' over Oscars not nominating Jon M. Chu for Best Director

Elphaba defied gravity, but the Academy apparently defied Michelle Yeoh's wishes for her Wicked helmer Jon M. Chu to score a Best Director nomination at the Oscars.

The 62-year-old actress stopped by The View for an interview on Thursday morning, which kicked off with panelist Joy Behar congratulating her for the blockbuster musical's 10 overall Oscar nominations earlier that day.

Behar then asked Yeoh if she and fellow stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande — who scored acting nominations for their roles as Elphaba and Galinda, respectively — had a chance to connect following the nominations announcement (which, interestingly enough, was hosted by their Wicked cast mate, Bowen Yang).

"Yes! We are all crying for joy," Yeoh, who won her first Oscar in 2023 for Everything Everywhere All at Once, told the cohosts. "But, we must say we are also crying because Jon M. Chu, Alice Brooks — our DP — were not nominated, but the rest of us are celebrating. Best Picture, costumes, hair!"

Sunny Hostin chimed in to tell Yeoh that the film is "fantastic," while Ana Navarro brought the conversation back to the topic of perceived snubs.

"This is the second time they've passed over Jon Chu. He should've been nominated for In the Heights," Navarro said, with Yeoh responding: "Yes, I agree with you!"

Wicked still fared well among top contenders at the Oscars, earning 10 overall nods from the Academy, atop grossing over $700 million at the global box office to date.

Previously on The View, moderator and Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg — who was absent from Thursday's live show — has said several times that she feels there's no such thing as a "snub" when it comes to industry awards, though she did address the lack of Academy attention for her 2022 movie Till on the talk show at the time.

"Before we start off, we just want to celebrate the talented artists and filmmakers who were nominated for Oscars this morning," the star and Till producer said. "Unfortunately, my film, Till, was not nominated, but we do want to congratulate all the nominees, because many of them have been here and it's wonderful to say congrats, so that's what we'll do."

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC, the same network that will broadcast the Conan O'Brien-hosted Oscars ceremony on Sunday, March 2.
